Gunmen shot and kill officer inside Mexican border city hospital The Associated Press
NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico- Four gunmen who entered a hospital to carry off a wounded man shot and killed a police officer in this violent border city Saturday, authorities said.
Rabindraath Quimbar, a 30-year-old ministerial police agent, died shortly before 6 a.m. inside the San Jose Hospital, according to Victor Almanza Hernandez, an investigator.
Hernandez declined to comment further, but hospital nurses said a man who had sustained gunshot wounds drove himself to the hospital. A few minutes later, Quimbar arrived and began questioning him.
Within a few minutes of the officer's arrival, nurses said, four men with guns moved into the hospital, shot and killed Quimbar and carried the wounded man away, in what was described as a rescue mission.
Police arriving at the scene impounded the car belonging to the man who arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds. No arrests had been made in the case.
More than 135 people have been killed by violence in this city across from Laredo, Texas, since January. Quimbar was the 14th police officer slain.
Authorities say Nuevo Laredo, rife with key smuggling corridors into the United States, has become the front lines of a bloody battle for territory between two of Mexico's largest and most-powerful drug smuggling gangs.
