How many push-up and sit-ups do you have to complete for the PAT?

I'm 31yrs old and want to make sure that I pass. I've been training for the run and everyother day I do PU and SU. What's the minimum for 1 minute? Any help would be deeply appreciated.

MSP does not have a minimum number of PUs or SUs. As far as I know other departments don't either

I thought if you were called in to test for the PAT at the State Police it is only 1.5 mile run?

Plus the two obstacle courses.

Posted by: Enforcer174

What does the obstacle course consist of. Is it a timed run? What type of obstacles?

Negative, No 1.5 run. No pushups or situps at the test. In the Academy they will do "motivational exercises" The test starts with an approx. 400 yard run, 4 laps, 1st lap You go under an 18 inch high bar (usually by sliding) Lap 2 you go up one side of a staircase then down the other stepping on each step. Lap3 three you climb through a window frame, and Lap 4 you climb a 5 foot wall then run slalom through some cones. All this must be done in 2:08 I believe (Might be a second more or less) Then you have to pull a 75 lb heavy bag over a line two feet away twice. Pull the trigger of a gun 6 times with each hand in 12 seconds. Drag a 150 dummy 25 feet in 40 seconds (Approx.) That's it. If you are not in decent shape you will be winded. Strength and agility are tested more so than endurance.

Hope this helps. Obviously i've attended a few of these.

I beleive Enforcer was asking about the MSP PAT, not the Civil Circus PAT.

Posted by: Enforcer174

Yes, I was asking about the MA State Police obstacle course. I know there is a 1.5 mile run, but I didnt know there was an obstacle course too. Just trying to find out what exactly is in this obstacle course. I can do the run no problem, but if there is an obstacle course that might be a problem. Any info would be great. Thanks

If you can do the run with no problem, then I wouldn't worry about any obstacle course.

Pacman Accually Told You Like It Is......i Basically Did What You Are Doing To Prepare For My Pat...sit/ups...lots Of Chair Lifts And 2 1/2 -5 Mile Runs. As Long As You Are Running And Have Pretty Good Upper Body Strength, I Wouldnt Worry. If U Feel That You Are Lacking In One More Then The Other Just Make Sure Where Ever Your Strength Are That You Give It 110% Then You Will Have Enough Time To Do What You Are Weakest In Even If It Takes Several Attempts. I Lack Upper Body Strength So I Made Sure I Ran Fast-not So Fast To Exhuast Myself But Just Fast Enough To Buy Some Time For The Wall. Call Them Up And Ask If You Can Do A Dry Run 1 Or 2 Weeks Before Testing. Good Luck In Your Future.

Thanks for all the great replies!! Just so I that I have it straight, a 1.5 run and 2 obstacle courses, no push-up / sit-up test to get into the SPA.
Right?

I currently have a temp. arm injury OJI therefore if an obstacle course is something that I have to climb, jump or use my arm I counldnt do it right now. Iam cleared to run by the Dr., as running wouldnt pose a problem to my arm. Looks like I might have to defer this one...

I thought it was just a run. By the time the 70th went in I would be 100%..

There are 2 different courses at the MSPA....both were done in the gym last spring. Both were 2 laps around the gym going over and under various objects. They involved pushing a weighted sled a few feet, using an arrest similator, and dragging a dummy. Both had to be done in around 1:50. From what i saw, no one failed either course that day. IF you are in shape to pass the 1.5 mile run, these courses should not be a problem.

Sgt. C, Keep running and keep doing SU and PU. If you are good shape you should do fine. For SU 35-40 and PU 35-40 will make you competitive with the top. The obstacle course is a speed and agility test. Work on a track doing sprints, but do not slack off on the LOOONG distances 2-5 miles. Any more questions I can answer, just write and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. TPR H
