FRAMINGHAM —
A Framingham man who led Wal-Mart security on a chase through parking lots, another store and a wooded area on Monday grudgingly told police he was impressed by their tenacity.
Toby D. Waithe, 29, was arrested at 2:10 p.m. near the AMC Theaters covered in water and leaves after 15 minutes of trying to avoid Wal-Mart security guards after he shoplifted, police spokesman Lt. Paul Shastany said.
"He said (after he was arrested) he couldn't believe Wal-Mart loss prevention wouldn't give up," the lieutenant said. "He wanted to give them credit for for chasing him for so long."
The chase did result in several 911 calls, Shastany said.
After Waithe was caught stealing $186 worth of computer equipment, Shastany said he ran from Wal-Mart to the Shoppers World parking lot. While at least one security guard chased him on foot, another chased after Waithe in a sports utility vehicle, which had several people calling police reporting someone was being chased by an SUV.
Then, Shastany said, Waithe ran into the Barnes & Noble store at Shoppers World. The security guard chased him through the store, into the men's room and back out into the parking lot.
Waithe then disappeared in some woods between Shoppers World and the theaters, where detectives arrested him after a brief struggle.
"He was covered in water and leaves from when he ran through the woods and a stream," said Shastany. "He was yelling out obscenities. When they were trying to cuff him, he continued to rant and rave."
Also, when police arrested Waithe, he did not have any shoes on. He told them he took them off because he got better traction without them.
Waithe of 198 Union Ave. was charged with shoplifting of property worth more than $100, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Waithe pleaded guilty to both the shoplifting and resisting arrest charges at his Framingham District Court arraignment. He was fined $150 for the shoplifting charge and placed on four months' probation for the resisting arrest charge.
The disorderly conduct charge was dismissed.

I can neither confirm nor deny that during my tenure as a "floorwalker" for Filene's at Downtown Crossing that I chased a shoplifter from Summer and Washington to Chinatown near Tufts, over a couple of rings.

When I worked the mall next door to you Killjoy, some of the exploits of the Filene's Loss Prevention guys was legendary..... and on film. The Food Court was never quite the same!

What would the old shoppers world police do?? Quite honestly being unarmed and getting paid crap to work wal-mart loss prevention isn't worth your life.

I have to admit I chased many section 12 patients out the ambulance bay and down the main rd...funniest would be the naked one I tackled into a snowbank....

Ha ha! I got into a knock-down, drag out with a guy who stole an entire rack of bracelets in the food court at the Corner Mall.

Well, most the crew there were young, and foolish and we had a lot of enthusiasm for our work. A lot of college students, some ex-military types, most hungry to become law enforcement officers. Many Filene's Alumni went on to become police officers, firefighters, even a few feds.

Ahhh, brings me back to the days of downing beers after work at JJ Foley's, recalling our foolish deeds, and trying to pick up the ladies!
