BSC PD training?

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Posted by: 2-Delta

Asking on behalf of a friend, anyone know what kind of training and academy Bridgewater State College PO's get? Thanks in advance.

Posted by: JP64

BSCPD will often send you through the MPOC, but usually after a year. You are then contractually obligated to them for two years after academy graduation, at a salary of 27K.

STAY SAFE

Posted by: mpd61

Thats Right!

Dancing Dave and Earwax Eric send their troops to MPOC and are supportive of other trainings. Just remember if your're under thirty to lie and tell them you'll never leave for a municipal job!

Posted by: mpd61

Hey Macop!

Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Major step BACKWARDS!!!!!
Hang in there! You've come too far with MPOC and the "Real Shit" to even think about it. If you need to go, go to N.H., Vermont or Maine. It's your life but, my god, don't go backwards!!!!!!

Posted by: 1zero7

Macop,
Ya...he's right...and you know it! Don't let the tree's up in the hills cloud your judgement.
But... if you must go there...stop making them sound like they are just a step down from the state police.

PS: Tell Jed I said hi!

Posted by: Macop

McCumstain u r just jerlous, hahahahaha. mpd61 you know thier reputation, you really think that its a step backwards?

Posted by: j809

MACOP,

It is a step down, from being acting chief in a municipal department to working as a campus police officer 1. You will always have that haunting you when you go for other jobs and you will always have to explain it. Yes it's bad where you are, but it shows you can dish it out and when the going gets tough, you stick with it and that shows that you are not a quiter. Go to another municipal department but for god's sake don't go back. Besides you will not do the same stuff at BSC that you are doing now, trust me. And it's only $498 a week brother and no take home car, bridgewater pd doesn't really care for anyone but themselves and you will always have to worry what your job is going to be when the new president of the college gets in, every few years. You could be a hard core cop one year and a door opener the next.

Yes I know their reputation. They are a decent department, but have their quirks too! Handsome on outside, but look deep.

Less pay
Less action
Less responsibility
Less prestige

It all adds up to regret. No matter what crap you are puttin up with politically/personally, I know you can tough it out long enough to lateral to another municipal/city gig, even out of state. Good Luck Dude!

Posted by: Macop

Well you guys make valid points, I guess I will have to think about it longer, hell I did'nt even get a 2nd interview yet. They might throw my shit in the waste baskett.

you probably scared them with your level of intellect.

Posted by: DC813

MPD61,
What the hell are you talking about with your comparisons between the job that the acting chief holds?,,how do you know what that town out there does...some of the western MA towns are very slow and have one full time member (the Chief). Bridgewater State is a busy place to work, it certainly isn't more prestige or money, but it's a step in the right direction. Also, most of the western MA towns aren't civil service so he wouldn't be able to lateral to another town.
Small town Western MA isn't anything like regular towns/cities and most of them aren't as large or organized as most college agencies.

Posted by: fscpd907

DC813,

I agree with you 100% BSCPD should not be looked upon as a step back in a law enforcement career. In many ways BSC is run more like a City/Town Department than a College PD. We all saw what happened in Brimfield and working in a Western Ma Town means you are at the mercy of the selectman. 3-4 years down the road a person with a background as an Acting Chief could move up the ladder at BSC and slide into an Lt. spot in a very pro-active Department.

Posted by: pickels

Macop,
Your lucky you got one interview, I never even got called for one. I give up trying to work for "Dancing Dave" \/ and "Earwax Eric" :/

Posted by: mpd61

My dearest DC813 & fscpd907,

The decision rests with Macop. I know the primary reason he is under some stress in B-Town. It is not a happy situation. I also know BSC. After a short while, he would not be very happy there. Bottom line is I do not think he NEEDS to jump at BSC. He has other irons in the fire and I sincerely wish him the best with waiting those out. Just my humble opinion.

PJM,

You're ship will come in someday too buddy!

Well, ya know................

He did go to MPOC wayyyyyyy back in like 96/97 @ Plymouth when he was a campus cop at Mass College Of Art. And he did apply for the chiefs job in Harvard, Mass last summer. Guess he didn't get interviewed huh?

Posted by: badogg88

Are there any female officers out there? How did you start in the LE area? I want to be a police officer but I honestly have NO idea where to start. My roommate and I literally both had break downs the other day because neither of us know how to begin our future careers (she's wants to be a teacher.) Actually, ANYONE! How did you all start off? Any advice? Be advised though, I'm still in college. Criminal Justice major and all that fun stuff. Thanks!

Where do you guys get your information about BSC Police?

Do just like all of us have done and continue to do.....take civil service exam.

Aw shucks, BSC ain't that bad. And working with Eric is a swell experience. He's an honest guy and treats the officers with dignity and respect. He can be couned on to do the right thing for his officers. The job itself is great too!

Of course when the chief finishes law school in a few years Eric will step right up to the plate to take over. Won't that be great! He has a great team approach to solving problems in the department and works very well with the officers. People there just can't say enough about him. He's a true cops cop!

OH MY GOD!

Wipe your nose Dude!!!!! It's actually dripping brown!

Posted by: mtr111

Come on Mitpo62 we both know your waiting on Taunton; or will you turn it down

Posted by: Mitpo62

Ok, I know what's going on here. You people don't understand. Perhaps it is a little complicated. Perhaps "earwax" is just misunderstood. He means well, and tries hard to please. He is truly compassionate with a strong desire to be "one of the guys". Gosh, he's someone to really look up to!

Posted by: Mitpo62

Hey and that Froio guy at BSC is one of the few bosses that actually cares about their people. He's a straight shooter no holes barred boss. He puts his family first and is a true human being. You go LT!!

Posted by: stadinko

Let's look a bit deeper shall we? Word on the street is.. The Chief has no academy?! He and his second in command have little road time and no street cred. The Lieutenants are officers with white shirts on and no supervisory experience or additional training,(although I hear one or two have some redeeming qualities). The officers I've met seem to be basically competant but pissed off. Good place, bad management. A scumptious chocolate covering hiding a fecal core.

Do just like all of us have done and continue to do.....take civil service exam.
..Or go to another state where there are many more jobs and 10x easier to get on...

Just a little sarcastic eh? From what I hear, if you get rid of Eric BSC would be a great department to work for.

Aw come on now, give the guy some slack. He's just misunderstood!

Posted by: tocoloshi

I have to jump in here. Earwax needs to go. Speaking from experience, BSCPD would be a good place to work if not for...
The second worst thing is the pay! How can you live on $28k? It is ridiculous - have they even gotten their rasies from three years ago yet? My heart goes out to you guys (and women), I remember the struggle!
See you soon for coffee!!!

MITpo61,,

He can't be as bad as Anne "B.I.G" G. was at the MIT. I feel bad for the officer who have her as a chief in California. Remeber all those memo's I use to post on the board. Barratta use to get soooo mad. HEHE.

I have to add my two cents worth to this BSCPD and to Campus L.E. in general.

A job in Campus L.E., is Ok ( depending on where you work) especially for a person looking to get their foot into Law Enforcement. As we all know, not everyone can be a trooper of a municipal officer (because of Civil Service and politicians), so getting a campus job can be a good start.

If the state and the liberal college president didn't handcuff campus officers, the job could be a desent career if someone chooses that route. I think campus law enforcement gets a bad rap no matter who you are or where you work.

I worked at MIT for three years so I talk from experience. The money at MIT was good and the training was descent. I chose MIT because I had to wait for the Civil Service test and to see if I could get hired with a 96 and 97. I set goals for myself and they couldn't be achieved in Mass so I moved out west. I am not saying moving is everyone's answer but staying in Mass and waiting out the economy will limit other people's goal to became a police officer.

Individuals have to weight their own goals, facts about the job and other personal issues when deciding to take a campus police job. As allways, I am not out to offend anyone or any agency. I am just giving my two cents worth.

I havea freind who works at Westfield State and they just got big raises, so I imagine BSC must have to. Also MasstoAzcop what are good places to look in AZ, that may accomodate out of state testers?

Itll be interesting to see what happens come July when the "new" contract is supposedly going to be out.... ZERO raises for the next 20 years perhaps?

to MACOP,

All the police agencies test just about once a month. It all depends what you looking for in an agency. Phoenix is the largest agency with over 2,000 officers and they hire the most. The best agencies east of Phoenix are Chandler, who has 300 sworn and Gilbert who has about 150. As for the Agencies west of Phoenix, Goodyear (50), Buckey(20-30), El Mirage (20-30), Surprise (50), Peoria (50) and Glendale (250). All the cities in the west valley are still growing pretty fast, so they will be adding alot more officers in the next 10-15 years. All these agencies have state of the art equipment and some even give officer's take home cars.

Stay away from Tempe,Mesa, Avondale, DPS(Highway Patrol) and Maricopa County. These agencies have alot, I mean alot of problems going on with them.

There are alot of smaller agencies outside the Greater Phoenix area. If your thinking about Southern Arizona, look into Tucson, Pima and Pinal Sheriff's Office are .

As for the starting pay, most of the agencies start their officers at or about $39,000. The housing market in Arizona is a lot more affordable than Mass. You can get a brand new house with 2200 sq feet for as little as $130, 000. You don't have to worry about jurisdictional problems. Once your certified as a Peace Officer in Arizona, you have police powers throughout the state.

Always remember that Arizona agencies have the same type of B.S you associate with policing.

If your serious thinking about moving out her to became an officer, send me an e-mail and we can talk.
