Man sentenced to eight years in murder-for-hire plot
By Associated Press
Tuesday, July 26, 2005

BOSTON -- A former correctional officer was sentenced by a federal judge yesterday to eight years in prison for trying to hire a former inmate to kill the mother of his 3-year-old son. Robert A. Ramos, 44, of Dartmouth, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William Smith. His prison term will be followed by three years of supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Ramos admitted in January that he recruited the former inmate and offered him $5,000 to kill the woman because he didn't want to pay child support. The former inmate contacted authorities after he was recruited and agreed to be a cooperating witness against Ramos. Ramos, a former officer in the Bristol County Sheriff's Office, advised the man to make it look like a robbery or a drug overdose, prosecutors said. Ramos gave the man a detailed physical description of the woman and drew a picture of the layout of her home, prosecutors said. Ramos was arrested in December 2003.
