Mall Rats Not Welcome In Holyoke

Jul 12, 2005 12:44 pm US/Eastern
HOLYOKE (AP) -- It's getting tougher for teens to hang out at the Holyoke Mall.

Beginning in September, children younger than 18 won't be allowed in the mall unless accompanied by an adult on Friday and Saturday nights. I-Ds will be checked at mall entrances.

Managers say the new policy is aimed at groups of teen-agers who regularly hang out at the mall. While no major problems have been reported, officials say older shopping are often intimidated by the teens and stay clear of certain stores.

The Holyoke facility is managed by the Pyramid Company, which has similar adult supervision policies in place at three shopping malls in New York state.

Teen-agers who work at the mall will not be affected by the policy.

Hmmmmmm....... this could be a good or a bad Thing.............

This new rule will last a week until the Management realizes the added cost of additional security officers at all the entrances.

I've seen (and known) security at that mall...it will do nothing except piss people off and lower sales at certain ghetto stores...I mean the mall.

Well since the mall is made up of mostly ghetto stores, you're right. Although there are some national chains in there, it is a big mall with alot of no name stores as well. Still waiting to see "Enriques FUBU Shop" with goods that "fell off a truck"... oh wait, they have some of those...

Other malls have tried this, one in Manchester, NH for 1.
Anybody know if the security guards ever get harassed or assaulted by these kids?
I was just thinking that if 1 or 2 rent-a-cops are trying to keep a group of 5 or 6 16 or 17 yo's out, does it ever escalate to violence? Any thoughts?

What's good about that is that it will drive the kids away from being at a public place where there are adults around, security etc. and they can instead hang out on street corners and stuff...

I'm sure business will increase five-fold because usually only adults go shopping late on friday and saturday nights...

Cowboy, I'm with you on this, I worked as mall security a long time ago and the kids are usually the least of your worries. It is a safe environment that kids can socialize and hang out without getting into trouble. What other choices do they have on a friday or saturday - getting someone to buy for them and hiding in the woods, I'd rather see them spend time at the mall.

Seriously though... think about this... would you rather have your high-school aged daughter in a public place hanging out, shopping, flirting and being social with some of her other little friends, where nothing of the explicit nature (sex or drugs) could be done due to the massive amounts of people walking around, OR, would you rather have them hanging out in the basement in a kid's house who's parents left for the weekend, playing "experiment" because they really have NOWHERE else to go... I feel bad for these kids...

There was that incident at the Cape Cod Mall not too long ago, when the security was chasing some members of G-Unit and one of them pulled a Kennedy and went into a nearby pond...didn't make it out alive.

Its s good idea, Ive been to that mall and like other malls the kids are a pain in the ass, I wish all malls started doing this.

..and 95% of these little pukes don't even buy anything.. they just hang out.. loitering... shoplifting when they get bored.

In regards to the harrasement or assault...no, they typically will not assult "rent-a-cops" as you have put it, because they are all mall rats therefore they know they can be tresspassed from the property. Those who do act up are tresspassed, know that if they come back they go out in cuffs with BPD.

As far as the guy who went in the Drinky Drink, that was after a fight. "Rent-a-cops" are required to maintain visual contact, not chase, someone who flee's the property, because they have some "reason" to run, much like traffic stops who flee. Turns out that guy just got out of prison the day before. Dumb@$$ just cramped up after his 400yd run and 98ft swim.

Oh yeah, and most of the complaints from shoppers and storeowners are about kids hanging around in huge groups, doing nothing but standing there making noise, or in other words loitering.
