Child Last Seen When Dropped Off At Dad's For Visit

BOSTON -- Police are searching for a missing 5-year-old Lynn boy, whose father has been charged with child endangerment.

Giovanni Gonzalez weighs approximately 40 pounds and is 49 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. When last seen, he was wearing blue denim jeans, a red T-shirt, a silver braided chain and black Spiderman sandals.

He was carrying a black backpack that had the Transformers robot characters on it, and it contained some of his clothes and toys.
He has a faded skin pigmentation mark on the lower right side of his chest and a small scar above his eyebrow.

The boy was last seen Friday at 4 p.m. in the area of 2 Brightwood Terrace in Lynn, where he was dropped off for a weekend visit with his father.

The child's father, Ernesto Gonzalez Jr., 36, of Lynn, was arrested Monday and charged with child endangerment in connection with the child’s disappearance.

He denies that the boy was staying with him.

"The defendant, when confronted, has refused to cooperate with the police and assist them in looking for the child. That, coupled with the fact that he had a recent, undisclosed -- and he refused to confirm how it happened -- cut to his left finger, gives us cause for concern," state prosecutor John Dawley said.

The boy's mother speculated that Gonzalez may have taken the child to Puerto Rico, where his daughter lives, and he often talked about taking his son there for a vacation.

Gonzalez was ordered held on $500,000 bail by Judge Stacey Fortes-White and ordered to return to court for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 17.

Despite the man's arrest, Giovanni’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Anyone with information about the child’s disappearance or whereabouts is asked to call 911 or Lynn police at 781-595-2000.

I was down there helping Lynn PD. I just want to move away from the usual Local vs. MSP threads for a few moments (only a few). The Lynn guys were great to work with and treated all of us (MSP) beyond what was expected. I know somebody from Lynn's eve shift is going to get grief for opening their kitchen to us.

Cops scour Lynn in search for boy

A Lynn police detective searches yesterday in an alley for clues in the disappearance of 5-year-old Giovanni Gonzalez, who went missing over the weekend.

Police yesterday searched block by block on foot and in helicopters for any trace of a 5-year-old boy who vanished over the weekend in Lynn during a visit with his father.
As his mother begged for the public’s help in finding Giovanni Gonzalez, authorities checked Dumpsters and a local cemetery for evidence that might lead them to the boy.
“The only thing I’m asking is for anyone with any type of information to just please come forward,” said Daisy Colon of East Boston. “Even if they see or hear just a small thing, a small thing could lead to something big . . . I just want my son back.”
Colon dropped Giovanni off about 4 p.m. Friday at his father’s apartment at 2 Brightwood Terrace in Lynn for a scheduled visit, pending a Sept. 15 custody hearing.
When she returned to pick up the boy Sunday night, Ernesto Gonzalez didn’t answer the door.
Colon called police, who found the father alone in his apartment.
Gonzalez, 36, had an unexplained cut on his hand and told police he hadn’t seen his son since the previous weekend.
He was charged with reckless endangerment of a child and is being held on $500,000 bail.
Yesterday, Lynn police, state troopers, two state police helicopters, FBI agents and members of the Lawrence Drug Task Forcemethodically scoured the city.
“Right now, we’re doing an intensive grid search of the downtown area,” said Lynn Police Lt. Bill Sharpe.
Giovanni weighs 40 pounds and has black hair, brown eyes and a birthmark on his left inner ankle. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a red shirt and Spider Man sandals, and carrying a black book bag containing other clothes.
Police are asking anyone with information to call 781-595-2000.

Bloody Mop Found In Search For Boy

5-Year-Old's Father Charged With Child Endangerment

BOSTON -- A bloody mop was found in a Lynn father's apartment during police searches for his missing 5-year-old son, according to the Lynn Daily Item.

Giovanni Gonzalez has been missing since Monday when the boy's father, Ernesto Gonzalez, failed to return the boy to his mother's custody, police said.

Bloody Mop Found In Search For Boy

Blood was also found on the bottle of a pine cleaner in the man's Brightwood Terrace apartment, the newspaper reported Friday. Officials are trying to determine where the blood came from, but when Gonzalez was taken into custody, he had a cut on his hand.

Gonzalez, who works as a butcher, was arrested Monday and ordered held on $500,000 cash bail following his arraignment in Lynn District Court.

Since Monday, officials have searched Lynn neighborhoods, businesses, Dumpsters and a wooded area near Lynn's Flax Pond. Investigators had a false alarm near the pond on Thursday when children thought they found human remains, but it turned out to be nothing.

The boy's mother, Daisy Colon, made another plea Friday for her son's safe return.

"Right now, there is nothing new, nothing going on right now," Colon said. "I am not losing hope, but my feelings are worse now."

Giovanni weighs approximately 40 pounds and is 49 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. When last seen, he was wearing blue denim jeans, a red T-shirt, a silver braided chain and black Spider-Man sandals. He was carrying a black backpack that had the Transformers robot characters on it. It contained some of his clothes and toys.

He has a faded skin pigmentation mark on the lower right side of his chest and a small scar above his eyebrow.

Anyone with information about the child's disappearance or whereabouts is asked to call 911 or Lynn police at 781-595-2000.

Search For Lynn Boy Takes Crews Back To Cemetery

LYNN (WBZ) ― Investigators have returned to a Lynn cemetery on Monday in hopes of finding clues that will lead them to 5-year-old Giovanni Gonzalez, who has been missing for more than a week and was last seen with his father, Ernesto Gonzalez.

Police say the search at Pine Grove Cemetery was not sparked by a tip, they just want to cover as much ground as possible in their search for the missing boy.

State police and Lynn detectives searched all 250 acres of the cemetery, which is located about a half-mile from Gonzalez' home, with canines and rakes.

Meanwhile, police have obtained some disturbing evidence from Ernesto Gonzalez' Brightwood Terrace apartment.

According to a search warrant, police seized boots and jeans with red and brown stains, a mop head, a pine cleaner bottle, lighter fluid, trash bags, two knives, children's toys, a bike and a bike helmet.

The knobs on the sink in Gonzalez' apartment have also been swabbed and police have seized his computer and cell phone. Most of the evidence is at the State Police Crime Lab, but investigators with the Essex County District Attorney's Office are looking at the computer and phone.

Gonzalez has pleaded not guilty to child endangerment and is being held on $500,000 bail.

Prosecutors say Giovanni was dropped off at his father's home Aug. 15. When the boy's mother, Daisy Colon, went to pick him up two days later, Gonzalez said their son wasn't there.

Their search for Giovanni has spanned through Lynn all the way to Puerto Rico where Ernesto Gonzalez is from. Colon has also made pleas to his family for information about her son's whereabouts.

Police plot strategy in hunt for boy

Lynn case to air on 'America's Most Wanted'

By Jonnelle Marte

Globe Correspondent / August 29, 2008

LYNN - About 25 investigators from the Lynn Police Department, the FBI, and State Police met for several hours yesterday morning to determine the next steps in their search for a 5-year-old boy who disappeared almost two weeks ago.

"We are pursuing it that he is still alive," Lynn Police Captain Mark O'Toole said during a news conference yesterday about Giovanni Gonzalez, who was reported missing Aug. 17 by his mother two days after she dropped him off at the home of his father, Ernesto L. Gonzalez Jr., 36. "We have nothing at this time to suggest otherwise."
Investigators have been distributing a missing person flier that will be aired tomorrow on "America's Most Wanted," a move detectives hope will draw national attention to the case. The flier shows a picture of a smiling Giovanni beside a police photo of his father, a Puerto Rican native with a dark goatee.
"We don't know whether he's still in Lynn, whether he's still in Massachusetts," O'Toole said of the boy at yesterday's news conference at police headquarters. "We don't know who he might be with."
O'Toole said police have no evidence to suggest the boy has been taken out of the country.
Detectives who searched the father's apartment became alarmed when they found a blood-stained mop and blood on the cap of a cleaning product, both of which were tested. Steve O'Connell, a spokesman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, maintained yesterday that he could not discuss the blood test results because the investigation in ongoing. Investigators received the results Wednesday.
Among the items investigators took from Gonzalez's apartment were the mop and cleaner, toys, a knife, and lighter fluid, according to court records.
Giovanni's mother, Daisy Colon, reported her son missing after she got no response when she went to pick him up at Gonzalez's Brightwood Terrace apartment in Lynn.
Police later entered the apartment and found Gonzalez, but not the boy. Police have searched for the child in wooded areas, cemeteries, and empty buildings in Lynn.
According to police records, Colon told authorities that the parents had a verbal agreement to hold scheduled visits until Sept. 15, when they were supposed to go to court to work out custody and visitation rights. Ernesto Gonzalez Jr. denies ever having the boy and has refused to cooperate, though witnesses have told police they saw the father and son together the same weekend the boy went missing. The father has been charged with child endangerment and is being held on $500,000 cash bail.
Colon said yesterday that she believes that her son is still alive.
"I know and I have it in my heart, and I feel it that he is alive," Colon said in a telephone interview, her voice raspy.

Accomplice May Have Helped Kidnap Giovanni

LYNN (WBZ) ― Lynn police are looking into the possibility that someone helped a Lynn father kidnap his 5-year-old son.

Giovanni Gonzalez has been missing since Aug. 16 when his mother went to pick him up from a weekend visit with his father, Ernesto Gonzalez.

Police have always been looking into the fact there may have been an accomplice in the alleged kidnapping, the Essex County District Attorney's Office said.

Gonzalez has refused to cooperate with police and will not say what happened to Giovanni. He is being held on $500,000 cash bail on charges of child endangerment.

Gonzalez did not have a car, so police are now hoping buses and public transportation will offer clues into the little boy's disappearance.

A billboard with Giovanni's picture has been scheduled to be put up in Lynn's Wyoma Square. Clear Channel donated the space in hopes it will help with the search.

Investigators in Lynn say they have no reason to think that Giovanni is not alive despite a bloody mop being found at his father's home after the boy's disappearance. Upon his arrest, Ernesto Gonzalez had a cut on his hand that he wouldn't explain.

The search for the young boy has spanned throughout Lynn, including parks, cemeteries and lakes, and down to Puerto Rico where Gonzalez is from.

Giovanni's mother has pleaded to Gonzalez to talk to police.

Police urge anyone with information about Giovanni's whereabouts to contact Lynn police at 781-595-2000.

I pray that this poor little kid is found safe but we all know at this point the odds of that. If this guy, the so-called father is guilty, and we all have feelings on that, I hope he faces the true justice he deserves.

I wonder if Nancy Grace will devote 2 minutes of one episode to little Giovanni? Nah, she's making way too much money on Caylee to jeopardize that with any side stories. Just my two cents worth.

Father Says He Doesn't Know Where Lynn Boy Is

Ernesto Gonzalez being led out of court on Friday.
WBZ

LYNN (WBZ) ― Five-year-old Giovanni Gonzalez of Lynn has been missing for six weeks and the one person who may know where he is isn't talking -- his father.

Ernesto Gonzalez was back in court on Friday, arguing he should be able to get out of jail even, if he isn't helping police find Giovanni.

As he was led out of the courthouse and put in a police van, WBZ's Karen Anderson asked where his little boy was.

"Don't know where Giovanni is at," Gonzalez said.

After that, Gonzalez wouldn't say anymore.

In court, Gonzalez showed no emotion. Prosecutors told the judge he was the last person to see his son Giovanni.

After Giovanni's mother dropped him off for a weekend custody visit in Lynn, the father and son were seen together at a therapist appointment. "And there was an independent professional saying 'We saw his son on Saturday.' For all of Sunday, no one can account for the whereabouts of this child," the prosecutor said.

Police searches in neighborhoods and nearby woods also turned up nothing. "There was a time when the defendant was living out in the woods, and they searched those areas as well," the prosecutor said in court.

Giovanni's attorney, Lawrence McGuire, says prosecutors are grasping at straws, and claims there is no reason to hold Gonzalez on high bail for a child endangerment charge. "He has minded his own business and that's all the Commonwealth has, some suspicion."

The judge denied the defense's request for lower bail, explaining that Gonzalez leads the lifestyle of a loaner, has few roots in the community, and given the circumstances is a flight risk. He remains behind bars on $500,000 bail.

Prosecutors say police also have not been able to find Giovanni's clothes or his backpack. The judge told prosecutors that this could be a hard case to prove.

Report: Father Admits To Killing Giovanni

Police Skeptical Of Jailhouse Confession

LYNN (WBZ) ― During a jailhouse interview with a Boston Globe reporter, a Lynn father confessed to killing his 5-year-son, the newspaper is reporting.

According to the report, Ernesto Gonzalez Jr. admitted to stabbing his son, Giovanni, to death and then disposing of his dismembered body parts.

The jailhouse interview took place Wednesday, though the paper says it was not allowed to tape the conversation because of jail policy.

The extraordinary confession was met with skepticism by authorities.

Steve O'Connell, spokesman for the Essex County District Attorney's Office, said authorities are reviewing Gonzalez's alleged statement to determine whether it is truthful or not. O'Connell added that the investigation is ongoing.

Giovanni disappeared last August during a custodial visit with his father. Gonzalez has since been held on $500,000 bail on a child endangerment charge.

He is scheduled to go on trial Jan. 13.

According to the Globe's report, Gonzalez said he placed his son's dismembered body parts into plastic grocery bags and then disposed of them in separate trash bins.
