BEVERLY — Police arrested three teenagers who were drinking beer at Dane Street Beach as part of an effort to crack down on people bringing alcohol to public places, according to a police spokesman. Seventeen-year-olds Jonathan Caruso of 27 Herrick St., Daniel Dailey of 150 Hale St. and Nolan Maniates of 50 Rowell Ave. were arrested at 12:30 a.m. Friday and charged as minors in possession of alcohol. Caruso was also charged with being a minor in possession of a class E substance for allegedly carrying prescription muscle relaxers. They were all released on bail and will be arraigned in Salem District Court today. Beverly police spokesman John McCarthy said police have received complaints about noise and drinking from neighbors in certain areas of the city and have increased patrols in those areas. "The Beverly Police Department has a close working relationship with all of its residents, and in cooperation with concerned citizens, it is working together to reduce the drinking and disturbances occurring at the city's beaches and parks," McCarthy said. He wouldn't say who complained, or where and when officers will be out, but they will be checking areas regularly for trespassing, drinking, drugs and noise. All city beaches and parks close at 10 p.m. So when Patrolmen Michael Boccuzzi and William Barror spotted a car parked on the grass at Dane Street Beach at 12:30 a.m., they investigated and found the three boys, a 12-pack of beer and the prescription muscle relaxers. It was the first recorded incident of illegal drinking at a city beach or park this summer, but with increased enforcement it may not be the last , McCarthy said. "It's a focus of the Police Department, and one we take very seriously," he said. "It's all about responding to the community."
