KEENE, N.H. -- Two men were stabbed when a fight broke out at a party in Keene on Tuesday night, police said.
Police said they aren't sure what sparked the fight that led to the stabbing at 27 Coolidge St. Some at the party said the groups didn't know each other.
"We were just hanging out, and these kids came in, and we tried to get them to leave, and then they went to the street," said Brandon Baylif, a friend of the stabbing victims. "We told them, basically, to leave," said partygoer Patrick Fox. "It just got into something too huge for anybody to comprehend."
Justin Ranucci, 19, of Rhode Island, suffered multiple stab wounds to his back, left side and right leg. He was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and police said he is expected to recover.
Justin Bronner, 22, of Keene, was stabbed in the back. He was treated and released.
Police said they think Bronner may have been stabbed accidentally.
"The second victim may not have been the intended victim but had jumped in to help his friend," Lt. Jay Duguay said.
Investigators wouldn't say what weapon they believe was used, but Baylif and Fox said a steak knife they had in the house is missing. They said they are still trying to figure out how things went so wrong so quickly.
"It was just like, within the blink of an eye -- bam -- this happened," Fox said. "It was just bizarre, really. It was absolutely bizarre."
Police said they were trying to determine who was responsible for stabbing the men. Anyone with information was asked to contact either Detective Donald Lundin or Detective William Sargent at 617-357-9820.
