FAIRHAVEN — A Fairhaven man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly threatening a town highway worker with a screwdriver and then crashing his motorcycle into a telephone pole while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Jeremy Plante, 28, of 16 Shady Drive was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol (second offense), assault by means of a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct and operating to endanger, according to Fairhaven Police Chief Gary Souza. At about 12:25 p.m. Tuesday, Mr. Plante allegedly was riding his motorcycle towards Hawthorne Street, which was blocked off by the Fairhaven Water Department to repair underground pipes. Mr. Plante allegedly rode through the traffic cones and started to verbally berate the workers for blocking the road before driving away on the sidewalk to get around construction vehicles. According to Chief Souza, Mr. Plante returned a few minutes later, still wearing a motorcycle helmet. He then allegedly approached a worker, pulled a screwdriver out of his pants, pointed it in an aggressive manner and began yelling at the worker for blocking the street. A neighbor saw the incident and called police, but by the time officers arrived Mr. Plante had already left the scene. Police obtained a description of him and put out an alert, and within ten minutes off-duty police officer Lori Peloquin reported witnessing a motorcycle strike a telephone poll near 97 Adams St. Mr. Plante was the driver of the motorcycle, and though he had sustained minor injuries he refused medical treatment. Mr. Plante was also allegedly confrontational and agressive towards the police, and had to be stopped several times from lighting a cigarette while standing next to oil and gasoline that had spilled from the motorcycle. Officers determined that Mr. Plante was under the influence of alcohol, and officer Edward Riggs placed him under arrest. The worker whom he allegedly approached with the screwdriver also identified him as the suspect. Mr. Plante will be arraigned today in Third District Court in New Bedford.
