LONDON - The three explosions that ripped through London subway trains Thursday killed at least 33 people and an undetermined number were killed in a fourth explosion on a bus, British officials said in what Prime Minister Tony Blair described as a "barbaric" terrorist attack.

A U.S. law enforcement official earlier said the death toll from the four blasts was at least 40.

Some 45 people were in serious or critical condition, officials told reporters Thursday afternoon.

The near simultaneous explosions caused more than 360 injuries and came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the Group of Eight summit was getting under way in Scotland.

The blasts went off between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. local time. Implementing an emergency plan, authorities immediately shut down the subway and bus lines that log 8.4 million passenger trips every weekday. It brought the city’s transportation system to a standstill and left many central London streets deserted.

London police chief Sir Ian Blair said authorities had not received any warning. "We have been at a very high state of alert. Of course if there had been any kind of specific warnings we would have dealt with it," he said.

Four explosions confirmed
By afternoon, London hospitals reported one death and said they had treated more than 350 people. The Royal London Hospital in the city's East End, which received the bulk of the injured, said 123 of about 180 casualties had been treated and released.

British Home Secretary Charles Clarke said there were three explosions on the subway system and one on a bus. Earlier reports indicated six explosions.

“We do not know who or what organizations are responsible for these terrible criminal acts,” Clarke said.

Prime Minister Blair later left the G-8 summit for the day to return to London, while the other leaders continued the meeting.

"They will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilized nations throughout the world," Blair said before leaving and flanked by fellow G-8 leaders, including President Bush. "We shall prevail and they shall not."

Bush later warned Americans to be "extra vigilant" as they head to work.

Bus destroyed
One explosion destroyed a double-decker bus at Russell Square in central London, near the British Museum.

"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," Belinda Seabrook told Press Association, the British news agency.

She said the bus was packed with people. "It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air," she said.

Jay Kumar said he ran out of his business when he heard a loud explosion. He said the top deck of the bus had collapsed, sending people tumbling to the floor.

Many appeared badly injured, and bloodied people ran from the scene. “People were running this way panicked," he said. "They knew it was a bomb. Debris flying all over, mostly glass.”

How hard is it to think thata there were/are cells in all 5 2012 Olympic hopefull cities. Did NY and DHS dodge a bullet or was this coincidence?

Hmmm... Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, William Delahunt, Tom Reilly and all the other democ rats are silent. No outrage expressed about what the maggot terrorists did in London. Wednesday my husband was like "Watch now that London has the olympics, 20bucks they'll get a terrorist attack soon."

Did they ever find out if the bomb on the bus was a suicide bomber?

Papers reverberate with shock

Friday's front pages

Bastards, screams a front-page headline in the Daily Star following the
bomb attacks in London which killed at least 37 and left 700 injured.

"We will not be broken and we will get justice for the dead of 7/7," says
the newspaper's editorial.

"In the name of New York, Washington, Bali, Nairobi, Madrid and now
London, we shall have vengeance and justice," says the Sun.

"In the words of Winston Churchill in 1941: never give in, never," it adds.

"Make no mistake Britain will almost certainly have to sacrifice some of
our ancient legal rights if we wish to protect our citizens."

"The contrast between triumph and sudden vulnerability could hardly be greater," remarks the Daily Telegraph.

Al-Qaeda and its subsidiary branches... did not need the removal of
Saddam Hussein from power in Baghdad as an extra incentive."

"London was attacked because extremists want to ignite a "holy war"
between themselves and democratic society."

"The reaction of the police, medical teams and firefighters was remarkable," says the Daily Mirror.

"Their dedication and courage make the terrorists seem even more
despicable.

"This country has a long and proud history of standing firm against aggression. We survived the Blitz.

We lived through 30 years of IRA outrages.

"We will defy and defeat today's terrorists, too. Once again the British
people will triumph over evil," the newspaper concludes.

Front pages across Europe are also devoted to the bombings.

"London plunged into horror" says a headline in France's Le Figaro.

Liberation describes the bombing a "recurring nightmare".

"It is not easy to frighten the British," says Hungary's Nepszabadsag, pointing to our "self-control".

Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung says the reaction of Londoners was "remarkable and quite exemplary".

El Pais says: "The bombings remind us that our societies have a mortal
enemy, fanatical, yet sophisticated and implacable."

El Mundo remarks that information was severely rationed.

But ABC says the British put up with restricted information "for the sake
of national security" and adds the bombs would not change UK policy.

London bombs killed 'at least 50'

The final death toll for the London bombs will be at least 50, the head
of the Met Police says.

Sir Ian Blair said there were a number of bodies still in the Tube train at Russell Square but that the final figure was unlikely to top 100.

Sir Ian said the police had an "implacable resolve" to track down those responsible for the blasts.

The blasts on three Tubes and a bus left 700 hurt, with 100 held overnight
in hospital and 22 serious or critical.

A massive intelligence investigation is under way to find those
responsible.

Police have been unable to establish whether a suicide bomber was responsible for the attack on a bus in Woburn Place that claimed at least two lives.

But newspapers quoted an eyewitness who got off the bus moments before the blast who saw an agitated man in his mid-20s fiddling with his
bag.

Richard Jones, 61, an IT consultant, told the Daily Mail: "This chap started dipping down into his bag and getting back up. He did it about a dozen times in two or three minutes and looked extremely agitated."

The nature of the other three bombings is still unclear.

Mr Clarke has said the death toll is expected to rise. Police are likely to release more details about casualties and the hunt for the bombers later.

They have indicated there will be a more visible police presence in the
capital on Friday.

Police have said they had no warning of any attacks, or intelligence about
any other imminent threats

Jailed American link to London bombing?

An American citizen arrested last year by the FBI, and who has admitted to being a sleeper agent for al-Qaida, may be a key source of information regarding last week's London terror attacks, WorldNetDaily has learned.

Mohammed Junaid Babar, a naturalized citizen from Pakistan, was secretly taken into custody by the FBI last April. He has since admitted to aiding an al-Qaida plot to blow up discos, restaurants and train stations in London in 2004. He also told interrogators he smuggled money and military supplies to a senior al-Qaida operative in Pakistan and helped set up a jihad training camp in south Waziristan.

British authorities foiled the 2004 London bombing plot following Babar's admissions, which led to the arrests of eight British suspects of Pakistani origin and the seizure of 1,000 pounds of ammonium-nitrate fertilizer, which can be used to make explosives, from a storage locker near central London.

But sources close to Babar's interrogation told WND elements of the foiled bombing Babar helped to plan bear striking resemblance to last week's bus and subway attacks.

They also say a London native in custody in Pakistan who has been previously identified by Babar as an al-Qaida agent could be a major source of information regarding last week's attacks.

After his arrest Babar told interrogators Zeeshan Siddique, a British national with known links to al-Qaida, was involved in the 2004 London bombing plot.

According to Pakistani authorities, Siddique has talked about Babar, but has revealed little about his involvement with al-Qaida. Investigators say they uncovered phone numbers from Siddique linking him to al-Qaida operatives, including some of the eight arrested in the foiled London attacks.

But investigators are now interested in a note Siddique supplied during initial interrogations that may have contained codeword references to a future attack, sources say.

"There are specific troubling elements that have us concerned both Junaid [Babar] and Siddique might have a lot more information they could give us. They could prove to be good leads for the London bombing," said an FBI source.

The source would not say whether the U.S. or Britain will request the extradition of Siddique, who is still being held in Pakistan, or if either country would send interrogators to Pakistan.

Also of interest to investigators is Babar's connection to al-Muhajiroun, an Islamic fundamentalist organization based in London that claims it disbanded last year.

WND first broke the story Babar was a member of al-Muhajiroun, led by London cleric Sheik Omar Bakri Muhammad. The group maintained branches in Pakistan and in Queens, N.Y.

A U.S.-based leader of al-Muhajiroun who operated openly in Queens previously told WND on condition of anonymity: "I've known Junaid [Babar] for a long time. I met him about seven years ago in a local mosque in Queens before we both became involved with Muhajiroun."

The leader would not comment on Babar's involvement with his group, except to say Babar was involved in "organizational operations" in Queens and later in Pakistan, where he traveled after leaving a $70,000-a-year computer job because he wanted to join the jihad in Afghanistan.

Al-Muhajiroun has long been suspected of ties to al-Qaida. One of the Sept. 11 hijackers reportedly was involved with al-Muhajiroun, and according to an internal FBI memo by Phoenix agent Kenneth Williams, another Al-Muhajiroun member with ties to al-Qaida trained at an Arizona flight school prior to 9-11.

Following intense scrutiny by British officials, al-Muhajiroun last year claimed it disbanded, but sources say the group still operates underground.

It's leader, Bakri Muhammad, was recently caught delivering extremist sermons on the Internet in which he preached the destruction of Britain and America. And some of its Queens branch leaders are now suspected of forming the Islamic Thinkers Society, a controversial activist group that recently held a protest in New York in which American flags were desecrated and Islam's dominance over the U.S. was declared.

Bakri, who is suspected of having links with Abu Qatada, the alleged al-Qaida leader in Europe, warned last year of a pending attack in London.

"Here in London there is a very well-organized group, which calls itself al-Qaida-Europe," Bakri told the Portuguese daily Publico in an interview published April 18 last year. "I know they are on the verge of launching a big operation."

Said an FBI source: "We don't necessarily suspect al-Muhajiroun was directly involved in the London attacks. We are, however, concerned those involved could have attended Muhajiroun functions or may have links to some of its members."

Sources say Babar in 2004 told investigators al-Qaida is planning more attacks in the United States, and revealed a detailed plan to smuggle al-Qaida agents across the Mexican border.

Babar's assertions were reportedly part of the intelligence that led to warnings about a 2004 summer threat from the terror network.

Babar first appeared on the FBI's radar and was put on a terror watch list after he made anti-U.S. remarks to a Canadian news reporter in Pakistan following the Sept. 11 attacks.

He said despite the fact his mother had escaped from the ninth floor of one of the World Trade Center towers, his loyalty was "to the Muslims, not the Americans." He also announced his intention to fight with the Taliban against U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

WND was told an al-Muhajiroun leader in Pakistan, who appeared behind Babar in a British documentary aired on ITN television network in November 2001, may have been instrumental in arranging for Babar to travel there.

"I'm willing to kill Americans," Babar said in the television interview, adding that he had no plans to return to New York.

But Babar returned to New York April 6, 2004, and was placed under surveillance by a team of police investigators and FBI agents. He was arrested four days later on his way to a school for taxi drivers in Long Island City.

Three London Underground stations were evacuated at midday Thursday following reports of incidents, British Transport Police said. The Fire Brigade was investigating a report of smoke at one station.

Emergency services personnel were also responding to some sort of incident on a bus in the Hackney neighborhood.

A London Underground spokesman said there were no reports of casualties in the incidents.

The Warren Street, Shepherds Bush and Oval stations were evacuated. Emergency services personnel were called to the stations, police said. There were reports of a nail bomb that exploded at Warren Street but those reports have not yet been confirmed.

Some witnesses said they heard gunshots at the Warren Street stop but according to Sky News, police believe those noises were actually detonators going off for bombs that didn't explode.

"People were panicking. But very fortunately the train was only 15 seconds from the station," witness Ivan McCracken told Sky News.

McCracken said he smelled smoke, and people were panicking and coming into his carriage. He said he spoke to an Italian man who was comforting a woman after the evacuation.

"He said that a man was carrying a rucksack and the rucksack suddenly exploded. It was a minor explosion but enough to blow open the rucksack," McCracken said. "The man then made an exclamation as if something had gone wrong. At that point everyone rushed from the carriage."

Services on the Victoria and Northern lines were suspended following reports of a number of incidents, the London Underground said.

"I was in the carriage and we smelled smoke -- it was like something was burning," said Losiane Mohellavi, 35, who was evacuated at Warren Street. "Everyone was panicked and people were screaming. We had to pull the alarm. I am still shaking."

The reports came exactly two weeks to the day that four homicide bombers attacked three subway stations and a double-decker bus in London, killing 52 others.

Simon Marks, president and chief correspondent for Feature Story News, was reporting from the Warren Street Underground station for FOX News. He said the area was cordoned off as dozens of fire trucks and emergency vehicles were arriving.

"I think this looks like much more than a false alarm at this point," Marks told FOX News.

Bombers have again targeted London's transport system -
with up to four explosions reported.

the explosions were small and that police had the situation under control.

Across London, a man was arrested at gunpoint by armed police at the
gates of Downing Street

At Oval station there were reports of a man dumping a rucksack in a
carriage then fleeing as the doors closed
Shops, offices and homes were evacuated after reports of an explosion at Shepherd's Bush station.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a "cloud of dust" coming from the site as
police placed a cordon around the whole of Shepherd's Bush Green.

And it is reported that three people had seen a man run from the scene
shortly after reports of a bomb or chemical attack.

The explosion on the Number 26 bus blew out the windows, but there
were no reports of injuries
the strong smell of acetone would have sparked fears of a chemical attack.

And the smell indicated that the explosives had been made up incorrectly,
with too much acetone and not enough peroxide.

Witnesses to the explosion said there had been a bang followed by the
smell of smoke.
Armed officers were sent to University College Hospital amid reports
of a man seen with wires sticking out of his pocket.

It was reported an internal memo was sent to staff warning them to be on
the lookout for a black male, possibly of Asian origin, about 6ft 2ins tall
wearing a blue top with wires protruding from the back of the top.

A rucksack exploded as a Tube train neared Warren Street station, it has
been claimed.

There were also reports of gunshots being fired

Passengers said a man was seen running away from the station - where
one person was injured - at the time of the security alert and a man
carrying a rucksack was taken away in a car by British Transport Police.

You should be angry. At least you feel that way, after 9/11 I lived with all these damn liberals who all they wanted to do was forget it...All I wanted to do was fight back. Then the war broke out and somehow I was the bad guy because I supported it.

It's kharma, all the bad they do to us, will fall back on them...but be mad, you have that right. Be safe until you get over here...You'll have fun in Boston, it's no Connecticut, but it's ok

London Police Shoot, Kill Suspected Bomber
Friday, July 22, 2005

LONDON — Police on Friday shot and killed a man believed to be one of the people responsible for attempted bombings in the city just a day earlier.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair and London Mayor Ken Livingstone were expected to give a live news conference around 9 a.m. EDT but that event was postponed for a later time.

Sky News reporter Martin Brunt at Scotland Yard said police were telling him unofficially that the man shot was a "firm suspect" in Thursday's unsuccessful bombing attempts. That news network later reported that there were no explosives found on the man.

The man, described by passengers as South Asian, was shot was wearing a thick coat when he ran into the Stockwell subway station in south London Friday. Police reportedly began following the man when he left his home in an effort to arrest him. It's believed he may have been the suspect who put the bomb down in the Oval Street Underground station a day before, according to the Sky News reporter at Scotland Yard.

Witnesses said about 10 armed police in street clothes chased the suspect, he tripped, and, after telling bystanders to get down, police then shot him. The man died after being shot.

"They pushed him onto the floor and unloaded five shots into him. He's dead," witness Mark Whitby told the British Broadcasting Corp. "He looked like a cornered fox. He looked petrified."

Whitby said the man didn't appear to have been carrying anything but said he was wearing a thick coat that looked padded.

Sky News reported that a Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm that just after 10 a.m. armed officers shot a male at Stockwell Underground station.

"A man was challenged by officers and subsequently shot."

Police are believed to be under orders to shoot to kill if they believe someone is about to detonate a bomb.

Alistair Drummond, of the London Ambulance Service (search), said paramedics had been called to the station at 10:10 a.m.

Service on the Northern and Victoria Tube lines, which pass through Stockwell, was suspended because of the shooting, British Transport Police said. Stockwell is one station away from the Oval station, which was affected by Thursday's attacks.

Elsewhere, police evacuated one of London's largest mosques after a bomb threat before Friday afternoon prayers.

"Someone phoned our director and said there was a bomb inside," said Mohammed Abdul Bari, chairman of the East London Mosque (search).

The Metropolitan Police lifted the cordon about an hour later, saying no armed officers were involved, and the incident appeared unrelated to the subway shooting.

More than 6,000 people were expected for Friday afternoon prayers but there were only about a dozen people inside at the time the threat was telephoned in.

Investigators, meanwhile, searched for fingerprints, DNA and other forensic evidence connected to Thursday's attacks on three subway trains and a double-decker bus, which were hauntingly reminiscent of suicide bombings only two weeks before.

The devices in Thursday's attacks were either small or faulty, and authorities said the only person who needed medical attention was a person suffering an asthma attack. The July 7 bombings on three Underground trains and a bus killed 56 people, including the four suicide bombers.

A statement posted Friday on an Islamic Web site in the name of an Al Qaeda-linked group claimed responsibility for Thursday's attacks. The group, Abu Hafs al Masri Brigade (search), also claimed responsibility for the July 7 bombings. The statement's authenticity could not immediately be verified.

The attacks targeted trains near the Oval, Warren Street and Shepherd's Bush stations. The double-decker bus had its windows blown out on Hackney Road in east London.

Jittery commuters already facing cutbacks in service from the last attack faced more Underground closures Friday.

"People are worried, but if it's going to happen, it's going to happen, isn't it?" said Chidi O'Hanekwu, 23. Still, he said he found himself being "a bit more paranoid" on the ride in.

Mia Clarkson, 24, defiantly said she refused to change her schedule. "You've got to keep living, don't you?" she said as she exited the Chancery Lane station after a trip from across town.

Newspapers reflected the city's volatile mood — part defiance, part anxiety.

"Britain will not be beaten," vowed a front-page headline in the Daily Express. "Is this how we must now live?" asked the Daily Mirror over pictures of the attacks' aftermath. The Independent had a similar photo montage and the words: "City of Fear."

Police would not comment on the investigation. Witnesses described seeing men fleeing several of the attack scenes.

The nearly simultaneous lunch-hour blasts agitated a jittery capital.

Police appealed for witnesses to give information and set up a Web site to receive amateur video of the attacks and their aftermath.

"Clearly, the intention must have been to kill," Blair said. "You don't do this with any other intention."

The London transport agency said the three affected subway stations remained closed Friday, and service was suspended on all or part of several lines. Other lines have been disrupted since the attacks two weeks ago.

Authorities said it was too early to determine whether the attacks were carried out by the same organization as the July 7 blasts — or whether they were linked to Al Qaeda.

Saudi ambassador Prince Turki al-Faisal (search) said the attacks had "all the hallmarks" of Al Qaeda.

"The modus operandi, the sheer cowardice associated with them and the attacks on innocent civilians — these are all part and parcel of Al Qaeda," he said in an interview with BBC radio.

Michael Clarke, director of the Center for Defense Studies at King's College, London, said Thursday's attacks looked "very amateurish."

Suspected Bombers

Police have issued CCTV pictures of four men they urgently want to
speak to in connection with the attempted bombing in London this week.

The pictures were taken at Tube stations and on a bus where small
explosions occured on Thursday

Scotland Yard said a man has been arrested in Stockwell in connection
with the investigation, following a raid on a block of flats.

The arrest came after police killed a suspected suicide bomber at a
Stockwell Tube station in south London.

The man, who was shot dead is not thought to be one of the four shown
in the CCTV pictures.

Another man has been arrested at Snow Hill station in Birmingham under
anti-terror legislation and two suitcases were dealt with by explosives officers.

At Stockwell Station, armed officers opened fire on the suspect after he
hurdled a ticket barrier and raced along a platform.

Police screamed at passengers to evacuate and are thought to have shot
the suspect as he stumbled on to a train.

Alarmed onlookers said they saw up to 10 plain-clothed officers chasing
an Asian-looking man before opening fire.

Metropolitan Police chief Sir Ian Blair said the shooting was "directly linked" to ongoing anti-terrorist invetigations in the capital.

He said the man had failed to comply with instructions from police before
he was shot dead.

The public should not approach these men and should dial 999
immediately if they know of their whereabouts, a spokesman said.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror
alert level from Run to Hide.The only two higher levels in France are
Surrender and Collaborate. The rise was precipitated by a recent fire
which destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing their military.
