A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man in Bellflower on Thursday night after the man allegedly fired a handgun at him, a sheriff's spokesman said today.
The incident took place shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday when two deputies driving in a patrol car near Clark Avenue and Walnut Street spotted a man who fit the description of a street robbery suspect, said Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy Luis Castro.
The deputies told investigators that when they approached the man and ordered him to stop, he removed a handgun from his waistband and fired at their car, Castro said.
One of the deputies fired several rounds at the suspect, striking him in the upper and lower body, Castro said.
Neither deputy was injured in the shooting, he said.
The shooting took place in the 9200 block of Walnut Street.
The wounded man, whose name and description had not been released this morning, was taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition this morning, Castro said. The man has not been booked by authorities, Castro said, although arrest charges are planned.
Investigators recovered a .45-caliber handgun from the scene of the shooting that they believe belonged to the wounded man, Castro said. He described the suspect as a "known gang member," although he did not specify the man's alleged gang affiliation.

The POS was hit in the upper torso and lower torso; yet, he lives! How many times have these types of no-goods popped a cap on an officer, nicked the officer and the bullet takes a circuitous route and ends up killing the cop? Seems like something is amiss.
I am glad the deputies are okay. They were lucky. Still in the patrol unit - sitting targets. This type of incident is becoming all too common around the nation.
