Selection Process
The selection process usually takes three months. Candidates must succeed in all of the following areas:
Written Examinations and Orientation Physical Agility Test Video Simulation Assessment Panel Interview Background Investigation Management Review Truth Verification Test Drug Screen Medical Exam Psychological Evaluation *There are no study materials for these examinations.
Physical Agility Test
APPLICANTS MUST BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING:
This is a 4 part test, all of which is pass/fail. You must complete each of the listed tasks in a satisfactory manner in order to pass and remain in the process. The requirements of the test are as follows:
Applicant must complete a 550 yard run in 2 minutes and 25 seconds or less. Applicant must be able to remove a 150 pound object (object will simulate injured person) from a vehicle and drag object 25 feet in 25 seconds or less. Applicant must be able to complete an untimed 1 mile run. Applicant must complete the run without ceasing forward movement. Applicant must be able to perform 15 proper sit-ups and 15 proper military push-ups in two minutes Video Simulation Assessment
For the video simulation assessment applicants are placed in a room by themselves with a TV, VCR and a camcorder. There is a practice video scenario and then eight scored scenarios. After watching a scenario, applicants have 45 seconds to respond to the characters on screen as though they were there. The video characters maintain eye contact during the applicant’s response, but there is no other interaction. The applicant’s response is videotaped and evaluated by trained assessors. This is not a test of knowledge of police procedure or criminal law. It is a test which helps us evaluate an individual’s interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills in dealing with a variety of people in difficult situations, like those that police officers encounter. There is not a pass/fail score for B-PAD.

Requirements for a Police Officer
Major requirements to become an officer include:
Minimum of 20 years of age at time of application. Must be in good physical condition with no obvious condition which will impair the performance of duty, and must pass a physical examination, and physical fitness assessment Must meet vision, hearing, and other physical requirements Must have a minimum of an Associates degree or 60 semester hours from an accredited college Must be a United States Citizen No felony convictions and no serious misdemeanor convictions in the past five years Valid driver’s license required; no suspensions of driving privileges in the past three years Must satisfactorily pass a thorough background investigation Must satisfactorily pass a Truth Verification examination. Must satisfactorily pass a psychological evaluation. Must satisfactorily pass a screening test for drugs. Any history of the usage of hallucinogens or other drugs whose possession would constitute a felony will automatically disqualify the applicant from consideration for employment
Requirements
Minimum requirement of 60 semester hours or equivalent. Typically, more than half of the recruits selected for an academy class possess a bachelor’s degree.
In addition to the age and education requirements discussed above, police officer applicants must be U.S. citizens because of their responsibility to enforce the U.S. Constitution, and they must be eligible to obtain a North Carolina driver’s license.
Preparing yourself for the hiring process
Enroll in college level courses at your local university or community college. Stay fit. Engage in aerobic and strength training activities. Stretch for greater flexibility. Request a copy of your credit history from Equifax, Inc. (1-800-685-1111), Experian (1-800-682-7654 or 1-800-392-1122) or Trans Union (1-316-636-6100) to ensure that financial information is correct. Correct any errors. Begin locating documents such as birth certificate, social security card, high school diploma, college transcripts (if applicable), military discharge Form DD-214 (if applicable). You will need these documents during the process. AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS:
Criminal History
Any conviction of a felony Any conviction of a crime for which the punishment could have been more than two years Conviction of one or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as Class B Misdemeanors within the preceding five (5) years Conviction of two (2) or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as Class A Misdemeanors within the preceding five (5) years. Must not have any DUI or DWI convictions Drugs
Any involvement in the sale of illegal drugs Any prior use of hallucinogenic drug such as LSD Use of any illegal drug within the past two (2) years Other
Dishonorable discharge from any military service (less than honorable discharge will be reviewed on a case by case basis)
Untruthfulness or the intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position
Deliberate inaccuracies or incomplete statements
Cheating on any examination or testing associated with the position
