BOSTON -- A Boston man was shot and killed late Thursday night in Fitchburg, the Worcester County District Attorney's office said.
A second Boston man was shot and injured. He remains hospitalized. A resident told NewsCenter 5 the shooting happened just before 11 p.m. District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr. scheduled an afternoon news conference to provide more details on the incident.
Crime is on the rise in Fitchburg because they just laid off six officers. The Chief then runs crying for the state police to help them out during this "trying" time. Fitchburg PD and SP have always worked hand in hand together.

Boston police need the public’s help in identifying two men pictured in photos taken from surveillance cameras at a convenience store. Police are calling the men “persons of interest” in a quadruple shooting in Hyde Park that unfolded amid a stunning spate of Hub violence Saturday. Police are also investigating whether the July 5 gunplay at Tedeschi’s on Hyde Park Avenue is linked to gunfire that erupted during a Fourth of July celebration in Fitchburg three hours earlier, killing one Boston man and injuring another. Nelson Ortega, 32, was fatally wounded and Ryan J. O’Neill, 19, is recovering from a bullet wound to the back. Police say three or four men started shooting at the Hyde Park victims, hitting one man in the left hand, another in the stomach, a third man in the left thigh and a fourth man in the inner left thigh. FITCHBURG, Mass. -- A Boston man has been ordered held with bail in connection with a fatal shooting in Fitchburg earlier this month.
Authorities said Ryan J. O'Neill, 19, of the city's Roslindale section, was arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Tuesday on charges of murder, armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm and possession of a firearm without a license.
O'Neill is charged in the killing of Nelson Ortega, 32, of Boston, who was shot in the head just before 11 p.m. on July 3. Some neighbors thought the gunshots were fireworks. Police Chief Robert DeMoura said the shooting was related to gangs and drugs and was not a random act of violence.
WORCESTER - A Boston man charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Fitchburg this summer has pleaded not guilty. Ryan O’Neill entered his not guilty plea to murder, assault and firearms charges on Wednesday in Worcester Superior Court. He was ordered held without bail. Police say 32-year-old Nelson Ortega suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head shortly before 11 p.m. on July 3 during what they called a gang-related "shootout." O’Neill also suffered a gunshot wound in the exchange of gunfire, which some neighbors mistook for fireworks. Two other suspects face arraignment in the incident.
