Diplomatic immunity doesn't stop Hernando arrest

BROOKSVILLE, FL -- When Hernando County sheriff's deputies responded to a call of a suspicious person offering to sell weapons to a 7-11 clerk, they knew they had an unusual case. Deputies didn't know how unusual until they arrived at the convenience store.

According to a police report, Roger Newton Daughtry II approached customers and a clerk in the store offering to sell rifles, handguns, tasers and computers.

When deputies arrived on scene Daughtry was in his car. Deputies didn't find any weapons, but say they did discover some marijuana and moved in to make an arrest. Deputies say that's when Daughtry "became hysterical advising he had diplomatic immunity due to his mother and father being pastors in an unknown church."

Deputies took Daughtry into custody on drug charges. The Sheriff's Office called the State Department to verify Daughtry's claim. The State Department said Daughtry did not have diplomatic immunity.

However Hernando deputies have given Daughtry complimentary lodging along with three meals a day. . . at least until he makes bail.
