WEST WARWICK, R.I. – Authorities are investigating an in-custody death with the West Warwick Police Department that occurred late Friday night.
West Warwick police responded to West Warwick Ave. where there was a report of suspects damaging a sign in front of Joyal’s Liquor Store.
Officers located a male suspect, later identified as Mark Jackson of Warwick, in the rear of the building. Jackson refused to comply with officer’s requests as they approached him and then according to the officers, became combative.
Jackson struggled with the officers who were forced to use pepper spray in an attempt to subdue him, to no avail. West Warwick officers were forced to use their batons to deliver strikes to the suspect’s lower extremities but were unable to handcuff Jackson until additional officers arrived on scene.
According to the arresting officers, Jackson was speaking when being placed into the police vehicle. When officers arrived at headquarters they noticed the suspect was not breathing and rescue personnel were called. Officers began CPR and upon their arrival rescue personnel took over. Jackson was transported to ken County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
West Warwick Police notified the Office of Attorney General as well as Rhode Island State Police in conjunction with State Attorney General’s protocol.
The cause of death is being investigated by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
