ATTLEBORO - A state police dog tracked down a burglary suspect hiding in woods off Burgess Lane in South Attleboro, ending an extensive search late Thursday night into Friday morning.
The suspect, Michael Antaya, 38, of 189 Japonica St. in Pawtucket, was arrested early Friday morning after he was apprehended by Cyrus, a state police dog, and his handler, Trooper Stephen Barnes, police said.
Antaya is accused of breaking into a Barishian Construction storage building on County Street. He is a former employee of the company, police said.
Antaya was ordered held in jail without bail pending a probation violation hearing July 24 in Attleboro District Court. Antaya has been on probation since 2004 for a drug violation.
Police were called to the building by owner James Barishian about 11:50 p.m. Thursday. Barishian told police he went to check on the building and saw a man run into the woods.
Officers Kevin Blackwell, Joseph Ryan and James Miller conducted a search with the assistance of Barnes and state police dogs handled by Troopers John Tasker and Nicholas Canavan. The search was conducted along nearby railroad tracks through mud and thick brush and thorns. Police said the suspect suffered scratches consistent with a person running through thorny woods.
