SPRINGFIELD - A brief police chase in which a fleeing vehicle's speed approached 60 miles an hour on Chapin Terrace ended with a crash yesterday morning in Van Horn Park.
Police first spotted the vehicle, containing two men and bearing Vermont plates, on Calhoun Street, said Sgt. Brian P. Manley. He added that when the two suspects saw police behind them, they started throwing items out of a window.
The driver ran a stop sign at Calhoun and Chestnut streets, sped up Chapin Street, crossed Armory Street, and hit a wooden guardrail at Van Horn Park, said Manley.
The passenger, Joshua P. Bedard, 20, of 1917 East Mountain Road, Gilford, Vt., left the vehicle and was apprehended by police after a brief struggle, Manley said.
Police found a bag inside the vehicle containing what appeared to be eight wrapped rocks of crack cocaine, he said.
According to police, Bedard was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and violation of a drug-free park zone. Edisamuel Ortiz, 33, of 646 Carew St. was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, violation of a drug-free park zone, three counts of failing to stop for police, and speeding.
At their arraignments in District Court, Bedard was ordered held in place of $2,500 bail, and Ortiz in place of $5,000. Each is due back in court on July 25.
Police Officers Edwin Irizary and Stephen J. Sicard arrested the men shortly after 1:15 a.m. The case remained under investigation.
