SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A recent college graduate has been sentenced to two years in prison for striking a police officer with his car while driving drunk last year.
Roman Dodd will spend two years in minimum security at the state prison under a plea deal with prosecutors.
The 23-year-old Dodd, who graduated last spring from the University of Michigan, expressed remorse at his sentencing Tuesday in Washington County Superior Court.
Dodd was traveling on Route 1 last July when he slammed into a police cruiser that had pulled over another driver for speeding. The car struck Gerald Richard, a veteran South Kingstown officer, knocking him into a ditch.
Richard says his shoulder is deformed and that his pain wakes him up four times a night.
