FRAMINGHAM —
A late afternoon swim ended in tragedy yesterday as an 18-year-old man drowned in a lagoon connected to the Sudbury Reservoir.
The man, whose name was not released as of last night, had been swimming with friends "for a long distance," in the words of Framingham Assistant Fire Chief John Magri. The friends lost track of the swimmer near an inlet flanked on one side by railroad tracks and on the other by the Massachusetts Turnpike, Magri said.
State police spokesman Eric Benson said the man was swimming with fewer than five friends at the time of his disappearance.
One of those friends called 911 around 5 p.m.
The first diver submerged in the lagoon to search for the man at 6:09 p.m.
Eight divers, including personnel from the Framingham Police Department, Framingham Fire Department, Natick Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police, searched the waters of the inlet for just under two hours.
Divers found the submerged body around 8 p.m., said Magri. After CPR was performed, the man was pronounced dead, said Magri.
"He was found very close to the last spot where his friends saw him," said Magri.
More than 40 public safety personnel responded to the scene.
Some manned rubber rafts. Others sealed off a path leading from the parking lot of Chef Orient on Rte. 9 to the railroad tracks that span a portion of the reservoir. While the path was closed to the public, an EMT gurney could be seen on the littered and rough-hewn way from the parking lot.
Under the railroad bridge - pocked with patriotic graffiti - is a popular summer swimming spot for local youths, said Jon Seaman, 19, of Framingham.
Glancing at the array of public safety vehicles - unmarked cruisers, Framingham Police Crown Victorias, a Fire Department SUV and ambulance - parked near the wooded and littered fringe of the Chinese restaurant's parking lot, Seaman said, "Kids swim around that bridge all the time."
Seaman also said locals often jump off the bridge during the warmer months of the year.
Magri, however, said the man's death was not linked with a leap from the bridge, reiterating that a long-distance swim was likely correlated with his death.
Mass. Pike rush-hour traffic slowed when approaching the water to glimpse the more than 40 public safety vehicles lining the breakdown lane just off the Framingham Rte. 9 off-ramp while numerous helicopters circled overhead.
