STOUGHTON —
Two Taunton men have been charged in connection with the theft of a company safe at Stoughton Autobody on May 26.
Police said Jason J. Souza, 30, of 48 Johnson St., Taunton walked into the Stoughton police station on June 19 and surrendered to authorities.
He is facing charges of being an accessory before the fact, accessory after the fact, and obstructing justice.
Souza, a former employee at Stoughton Autobody, was arraigned June 19 in Stoughton District Court and was released after posting $1,500 bail. A probable cause hearing has been scheduled for July 15.
Police obtained an arrest warrant charging another suspect, Kevin J. Camara, 23, of 409 Somerset Ave., Taunton, with felony daytime breaking and entering, larceny from a building, larceny over $250, and larceny of a firearm.
Camara is currently being held at the Bristol County House of Correction on unrelated charges. He will be arraigned in Stoughton District Court on the burglary charges at a later date, police said.
Stoughton Detective James O’Connor said that on May 26 the owner of Stoughton Autobody at 1069 Washington St. discovered that the company safe was missing and called police. It does not appear that force was used to enter the building, police said.
The safe contained $5,000 in cash bonuses for employees, company documents, and a .38-caliber Colt Mustang semi-automatic handgun, O’Connor said.
O’Connor said the investigtion and interviews with employees led detectives to believe that Souza “had something to do with it.”
He said that drugs appear to have been a factor in the burglary and that police believe that Camara committed the actual burglary and Souza had knowledge of it.
State police found Camara in possession of the handgun when he was arrested on unrelated charges in Taunton earlier this month, police said.
