HINGHAM — Police are looking into what they are terming a suspicious incident involving a man talking to children and their baby sitter on Scotland Street about 5 p.m. Saturday. The children’s father told police Monday that the baby sitter was walking with his two children along Scotland Street and the baby sitter noticed a pickup truck being driven up and down the road. The driver eventually stopped and asked the group if he could “help them cross the street,” according to police, and at one point grabbed one of the children’s bicycles. Police said the baby sitter walked into the nearest yard and told the man they lived there. The man then drove away. The driver of the truck is described as an older white male, about 5 feet, 9 or 10 inches tall with gray hair and a thin build. He was driving a green pickup truck. The driver is not wanted by police for any crime, and may only have intended to assist the children and baby sitter, according to police. However, police want to identify the man to clear any public concern. In April, a group of children reported a man driving in their neighborhood stopping to talk with them, warning them about talking to strangers and asking to play with their Nerf toy guns. The man recognized his own description in an e-mail he received about the incident through the police department’s e-mail list and contacted police. He said he was in the neighborhood because he was interested in moving there and did stop to say hello to the children. Police said the man’s story checked out. Anyone with information about the Scotland Street incident can contact police at 781-749-1212. Residents are encouraged to continue reporting any suspicious activity to police.
