HANOVER —
He won’t assume the post of police chief until July 1, but Walter Sweeney Jr. was installed as the town’s top cop Tuesday night.
In an eight-minute ceremony in front of family and friends, Sweeney’s wife, Andrea, pinned the gold chief’s badge on her husband’s uniform.
Two dozen uniformed police officers were among about 120 people who attended the installation. After receiving his new badge, Sweeney thanked selectmen, his family, and the Hanover police department for supporting him throughout his 26-years as a police officer.
Sweeney, 47, will be promoted from lieutenant to chief on July 1, one day after Chief Paul Hayes’ retirement.
According to Sweeney’s informal research, he will be the town’s seventh appointed police chief.
“I realize it’s a serious obligation,” he said, “and it’s really an honor for me to be the temporary custodian for that position.”
Selectmen believe that Sweeney, who has served as a Hanover police officer since he was 21 years old, will be a great fit to replace Hayes, the town’s chief for the last 11 years.
“He deserves the job,” said Selectmen Chairman Daniel Pallotta. “He’s going to serve us well; we’re really excited about it, and the Town of Hanover couldn’t have a better future chief.”
