Officials with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office say they were forced to shoot a knife-wielding man Sunday morning after repeated attempts to have him surrender.
Deputies say Brian Rhodes, a seven-year veteran, fired a single shot that struck
46-year-old Stephen Bryant.
The incident started when witnesses spotted a man, believed to be Bryant, jump a fence and start a car in the Spanish Lakes Riverfront neighborhood around 1 a.m. Sunday.
Deputies spotted Bryant in a white truck, armed with a knife. They believe he was heading towards an ex-girlfriend's house.
Deputies say they asked Stephen Bryant to surrender but he would not.
Deputy Brian Rhodes is being placed on paid administrative leave pending the Sheriff's review.
Stephen Bryant is listed in critical condition at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce.
