Two Suffolk County, New York police officers fatally shot a suspected drug trafficker in a close-range gun battle during a morning raid in Brookhaven hamlet Friday, police said.
More than a dozen emergency services officers arrived on Bay Road just before 7 a.m. with a warrant to search the home of Carmine Wisnieski, 26, who police believe was part of a narcotics ring in Long Island and New York City.
One officer carrying a handgun and another armed with a submachine gun had just begun an initial, rapid sweep of the single-story house when they reached an open bedroom door in the central hallway, said Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.
The officers, whose names were not released, said Wisnieski was standing in the bedroom and "in motion" with a 9-mm pistol as they shouted at him to drop his weapon.
"The officers then tell us that gunfire started coming from the room, from the individual with the gun," Fitzpatrick said. "They returned fire. He was struck and he fell backward on the floor."
Wisnieski was wounded several times, including once in the chest. He was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Neither officer was injured.
The submachine gun was capable of automatic fire but was set to fire single shots, Fitzpatrick said.
