Two area police officers out of a job and facing official misconduct charges are accused of pocketing money from speeders.

Mounds, Illinois police officers Travis Farley and Aaron Parker have been relieved of their duties. According to court documents, both are charged with official misconduct and theft.

Mounds Mayor Waymon Butler says he found out last week about the allegations. He says his police chief informed him that Farley and Parker were under suspicion for taking money from motorists for speeding tickets, then pocketing the money without reporting the tickets. The two men were fired last week.

“I think they let down their other officers. I think they let down the Mounds police force, and they let down the citizens of Mounds by doing that,” said Butler.

Mayor Butler says he has confidence in his police chief and is happy with the state police investigation. He says we can't judge everyone on what happens to one or two officers.

Charges were filed Friday in Pulaski County Circuit Court. Illinois State Police are in charge of the investigation.

Do they take cash on the side of the road as normal practice? I've never heard of that.
