Buckeye, Arizona, Investigators are looking into how police officers fatally shot a man early Friday after he reportedly targeted his ex-wife's new family in a Buckeye home invasion.

According to Buckeye police, a 39-year-old man broke into his former wife's home, fired multiple shots and later fled through the backyard to an adjacent street.

The man, whose name was not available Friday, then exchanged gunfire with a group of officers who responded. He was fatally wounded.

"I can tell you I'm impressed with how well they (the officers) handled themselves," police Lt. Phil Harris said.

Harris said the officers stopped the threat in a "dynamic" situation without causing collateral damage.

Officers responded to Buckeye's Sundance neighborhood about 1:45 a.m., when dispatchers received multiple calls about the home invasion in the 21700 block of West Cheyenne Road.

Police said officers responded to the scene, established a perimeter and called out the SWAT team.

According to police, the intruder reportedly broke in through a back arcadia door and fired inside the house. Witnesses told police he fired up to 10 rounds, which police described as coming from a semiautomatic handgun.

About 3:45 a.m., the man fled through the backyard, into a neighboring yard and out into the street at Hess Avenue and 217th Lane.

There, police said the man apparently fired at an officer, who returned fire. Nearby officers reportedly heard the shooting, went to the scene and returned fire.

Witnesses told police the suspect either dropped or placed his gun on the ground during the shooting. He then picked it up and again pointed it at an officer, police said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating. A spokesman referred questions to police.

Police were unable to provide any information about what may have prompted the home invasion and shooting.
