June 19, 2008, just before 5:00 PM the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office dispatch aired via police radio an "Attempt to Locate" for a maroon extended cab pick-up truck. A Montgomery Sheriff's Office deputy located the vehicle on FM 1097 as it traveled east into Willis. Two Montgomery County Pct. 1 Deputy Constables also identified the vehicle and initiated a pursuit as the truck traveled north towards Huntsville.

The driver of the pickup shot out the back window of his own vehicle and began firing gunshots at the pursing law enforcement vehicles. One Montgomery County Sheriff's Office vehicle was struck by gunfire and the deputy was seriously injured from shattered glass in his eyes.

The suspect vehicle was chased into the Walker County, Huntsville area where the Walker County Sheriff's Office and Huntsville Police Department assisted. At least one citizen's vehicle was struck by the suspect's vehicle. The suspect shot at law enforcement vehicles several times throughout the pursuit.

The pursuit terminated in a rock quarry at the end of 16th Street in Huntsville where the suspect exchanged gunfire with officers and rammed a Deputy Constable's vehicle.

Three Montgomery County Pct. One Deputy Constables received minor injuries. The Deputy Constable's were treated and released from a local hospital.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was Life Flighted to Herman Hospital in Houston. The suspect was pronounced dead as the result of a gunshot wound.

The Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.

The suspect has been identified as:

Casey F. Brunette W/M

Brenham, Texas

A Brenham man involved in a high-speed chase and shootout with law enforcement officers died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Texas Ranger officials said Friday.
Casey F. Brunette, 21, shot himself Thursday about 5:30 p.m., following a pursuit that started in Montgomery County near Willis and ended in Walker County, where he found himself cornered by police vehicles in a rock quarry in Huntsville, investigators said.
Montgomery County sheriff's officials initially reported that Brunette was pronounced dead Thursday, but he was kept on life support until Friday, said Tela Mange, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Brunette was an organ donor, she said.
One Montgomery County sheriff's deputy was seriously injured and three Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable deputies suffered minor injuries during the gunfire, authorities said.
The sheriff deputy's condition was not available on Friday. The constable deputies were treated at a hospital and released Thursday. Their names were not released.
The chase, which involved multiple law enforcement agencies, started shortly after Montgomery County sheriff's deputies responded to a 5 p.m. call about a maroon extended cab pickup.
The call was initiated after Brunette's girlfriend notified authorities and accused Brunette of making threats against her, Mange said.
A sheriff's deputy spotted the pickup on FM 1097, traveling east into Willis. Two Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable deputies also saw the vehicle and tried to pull it over.
Brunette continued driving and soon began shooting out the rear window of the pickup at the deputies as he traveled north toward Huntsville, authorities said.
A gunshot struck the window of a Montgomery County sheriff's car. The shattered glass flew into the deputy's eyes, leaving him seriously injured.
DPS troopers, Walker County Sheriff's deputies and Huntsville police joined the pursuit when it crossed into Walker County and they exchanged gunfire with Brunette, Mange said.
In Huntsville, Brunette slammed into a vehicle before speeding into the rock quarry at the end of 16th Street. He tried to turn around to get out but ended up blocked in by two law enforcement cars, Mange said.
He rammed into one of the police cars, exchanged a round of gunfire with law enforcement officers and then shot himself, she said.
He was flown to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.
DPS records show Brunette had a criminal history. In 1999, he was convicted of burglary in Harris County and served one year in jail. He also served 30 days in the Montgomery County Jail for criminal trespassing in 2001.
The Texas Rangers are still investigating the pursuit and shooting. It is common for the agency to handle investigations in rural counties and also is the agency's policy to investigate any incident involving DPS troopers, Mange said.

What is the difference between a Constable Deputy and a Sheriff Deputy in Texas? Anyone know. I know it is WAY different with Sheriff's and Constables down there, just not sure how.
