WESTERLY, R.I. -- A dispute over beachfront access has gotten ugly, as someone hid nail-studded boards in a road passing through private land to a public area.
Rhode Island Environmental Police found 10 boards filled with three-inch nails hidden on a sandy road that runs through the disputed area in Westerly and Charlestown.
The road leads to state land at the western side of Quonochontaug Breachway. Three cars lost tires to the nail traps last month, but no injuries were reported.
The revelation about the boards came during a hearing this week on the state's proposed parking ban on the state land.
Anyone trying to access the land must drive through private land, which some of the property owners say is trespassing.
Some, including sport fisherman, are objecting to the proposed parking ban.
