COHASSET — The police department has recognized five officers for their professional conduct in successful criminal investigations conducted during the past eight months. Officer Regen Steverman was given the department’s Meritorious Service Award for helping catch a suspect who, on Jan. 23, fled from police in a stolen car and then resisted arrest. The department’s Award for Excellence was given to Lt. Gregory Lennon and Detective Garrett Hunt for investigating the Oct. 13 robbing of a teller at the Sovereign Bank in Cohasset Plaza on Route 3A. Sgt. John Conte and officer Francis Yannizzi also received the Award for Excellence for tracking or pursuing suspects in a reported break-in at a Route 3A liquor store on Feb. 10. The break-in triggered a burglar alarm. According to the announcements, Lt. William Quigley recommended the five commendations to Police Chief James Hussey. Hussey made the presentations at the selectmen’s meeting Monday night. All except Lennon were present to receive the awards. The chief also presented the department’s Community Service Award for 2008 to Thomas Wigmore, the emergency dispatch center supervisor. Hussey noted Wigmore’s work honoring veterans and coordinating youths assigned by courts to do community service in Cohasset. On Jan. 23, Steverman took part in a search for one of the suspects in a drug-related assault. After being flushed out of the woods by police, the suspect stole a motor vehicle from a home on Old Coach Road and tried to flee. When the vehicle was blocked by a car operated by a Scituate police lieutenant, Steverman, with her gun drawn, approached the suspect’s vehicle, Hussey said. When the suspect resisted arrest, police broke a window to get at the suspect, he said. In his recommendation, Quigley praised Steverman’s “high degree of professionalism, proficiency and ability during an extremely critical situation.” The suspect, indicted by a grand jury, is being held awaiting trial, Hussey said. In the Sovereign Bank incident, Lennon and Hunt conducted “a methodical crime-scene search,” Hussey told selectmen. The results, along with their further research and “networking” with other police and detective unitsm, eventually led to the indictment of the robbery suspect, a woman, he said. In the Feb. 10 incident, the break-in suspects left the area in two vehicles. Yannizzi pulled over a car containing two suspects in Hingham, but the third suspect, driving a stolen van, failed to stop for Conte, who initiated a pursuit, police said. Conte pressed the chase as the suspect drove through Hingham, Weymouth, Quincy and Dorchester. Other police departments, including the State Police, became involved as the chase progressed. The stolen van eventually hit a utility pole in South Boston, and the suspect was captured after a brief foot chase, police said. The arrests led to the solving of breaking-and-entering cases in other police jurisdictions, Hussey said.
