WORCESTER—
Spencer Police Officer David W. Sullivan credits the protective gear he was wearing Aug. 27 with saving him from serious injury and possibly death.

Officer Sullivan, one of two police officers responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at 119 A Mechanic St., Spencer, on the night of Aug. 27, was stabbed in the chest by Richard C. Taylor with a 13-inch carving knife. The blade of the knife tore a hole in Officer Sullivan’s shirt and dented a metal trauma shield in the bulletproof vest he was wearing, sparing the officer what he said could have been catastrophic injuries.

“If it wasn’t for a metal trauma plate, I could have been seriously injured or killed,” Officer Sullivan told Judge John S. McCann during Mr. Taylor’s plea hearing yesterday in Worcester Superior Court

Mr. Taylor, 47, who lived at the Spencer address with his 73-year-old mother at the time of the attack, was sentenced to 5 to 7 years’ imprisonment with 15 years of probation to follow after pleading guilty yesterday to charges of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault, malicious destruction of property and resisting arrest.

Assistant District Attorney Joseph T. Moriarty Jr. said Officer Sullivan and Officer Norman L. Hodgerney Jr. went to 119 A Mechanic St. about 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27 after receiving a report that a man was “out of control.”

The prosecutor said police were called after Mr. Taylor threw a telephone and ashtray, pushed a hutch against a wall, destroying dishes and collectibles it contained, and verbally confronted his mother in a threatening manner.

After entering the house and identifying themselves as police, Officers Sullivan and Hodgerney called out to Mr. Taylor, then began searching for him, Mr. Moriarty told the court. As they were walking down a hallway, Mr. Taylor jumped out of an adjoining room and lunged at Officer Sullivan with the knife, the prosecutor said.

Mr. Taylor was eventually subdued with a chemical spray, but not before struggling with the officers and throwing the knife in their direction, according to Mr. Moriarty, who recommended a sentence of 10 to 12 years’ imprisonment with 10 years of probation upon Mr. Taylor’s release from custody.

Mr. Taylor’s appointed lawyer, Michael S. Hussey, recommended a prison term of 4 to 6 years with probation to follow. Mr. Hussey referred to a psychological evaluation of his client that he said suggested Mr. Taylor had been drinking and taking medications and was severely depressed, suicidal and in extreme pain at the time of the attack.

“It seems he didn’t care whether he lived or died. He was clearly out of control,” Mr. Hussey said.

As conditions of probation, Judge McCann ordered Mr. Taylor to undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations and any related treatment recommended by the Probation Department, to take any prescribed medications as directed, and to have no contact with the officers and their families.
