Milford police, state police and tracking dogs are searching for a 25-year-old Hopkinton man they suspect of dealing heroin after he fled from a traffic stop, according to police reports.
The pursuit began at about 11 p.m. Thursday on West Street, when police tried to pull over a driver they suspected of drunken driving, police said. The man got out of the 2003 Toyota Corolla and ran north, police said.
Officer Robert L. Tusino said he saw the man, later identified as Ryan Francis Devine, of 3 Thayer Heights Road, throw a bundle of heroin over his shoulder while running down West Street, according to a police report.
Police seized his car and confiscated 38 bindles (baggies) of heroin, hypodermic needles, and a bag of marijuana from Devine's car. Tests confirmed the substance was heroin.
"There was a good amount of heroin recovered," said Lt. James Falvey.
Police took his passenger, a 29-year-old Milford woman, into custody temporarily, but she was not charged.
The woman told police she had called Devine for a ride to Store 24, but "had no idea he had drugs on him," according to the report.
Police have issued warrants for Devine's arrest on charges of a marked lanes violation, miscellaneous equipment violation, failing to stop for police, operating under the influence of drugs, and a felony charge of possession of a heroin with intent to distribute, according to the incident report.
Hopedale and Mendon Police assisted in the search.
