NEW BEDFORD — A city teen will serve three to five years in state prison after being convicted Wednesday on firearms and cocaine trafficking charges.
Tyson Rapoza, 18, of 43 Locust St., will also be on probation for three years after his release from prison.
Police arrested Mr. Rapoza, a New Bedford High School senior, on Feb. 29 after searching his Locust Street residence.
Police found 54 grams of cocaine packaged for street sale, a .25 caliber handgun, one round of ammunition, $2,430 in cash, a digital scale, and paperwork belonging to Mr. Rapoza, court records said.
Mr. Rapoza had been without bail since a March 11 dangerousness hearing in New Bedford District Court. He was subsequently indicted on illegal gun possession and trafficking more than 14 grams of cocaine.
Mr. Rapoza's sentencing follows the policies of Bristol County District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter, who last year began requesting consecutive sentences for anyone charged with possessing an illegal firearm and drug distribution.
