Fall River —
Police have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with 10 holdups of small businesses in the past three weeks.
Jeffrey D. Cashman of 187 Rockland St. was apprehended without incident at his home Thursday about 4 p.m. following an “exhaustive” investigation by Major Crimes Division detectives, said police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti.
“Many of the robberies were captured on store surveillance cameras,” he said.
After reviewing the evidence, Detective Lawrence Ferreira suspected Cashman “from previous encounters,” Mauretti said.
Ferreira's conclusion was confirmed when detectives received an anonymous tip that provided a name similar Cashman's, Mauretti added. Cashman's photo was later chosen from an array by representatives of all the business that were robbed — nine in Fall River and one in Somerset.
Cashman is charged by Fall River police with six counts of armed robbery, one count each of armed robbery while masked, armed assault with intent to rob and attempting to commit a crime, to wit: armed robbery.
Somerset police also are charging Cashman with a holdup at Xanadu hair salon, 1234 Wilbur Ave., on Wednesday.
The Fall River incidents were at: Rite Aid, 1024 S. Main St., May 16 and 24; Lukoil, 339 Broadway, May 21 and 25; Honey Dew Donuts, 125 Broadway, and Millenium Pizza, 287 Broadway, May 27; Duke’s Variety, May 28; Drewbis Hair Salon, 250 Brightman St., Wednesday, and Maplewood Superette, 1545 Stafford Road, Thursday.
The suspect allegedly displayed a knife in nine of the robberies. At Millenium Pizza, he fled empty-handed after the clerk picked up the phone to call police, Mauretti said.
Detectives are examining several other local robberies, as well as two incidents in which cars were stolen from Maaco, 39 Seventh St.
“It is believed that the stolen autos may have been used in the robberies,” Mauretti said.
Arrested with Cashman was Heidi M. Niemic, 37, of 1017 Pine St., on charges of possession of Class A and B drugs.
“Detectives are continuing to investigate the possibility of Ms. Niemic’s involvement with the robberies,” Mauretti said. “However, she is not presently charged with those crimes.”
Chief John M. Souza said the apprehension of “this dangerous individual, whose serial criminal behavior over the past several weeks victimized a number of people and businesses in our community, was a fine example of the synergy of effort” from several of the Police Department’s divisions.
Souza commended all officers involved for their “dedication to this investigation ... We are looking forward to preparing these cases for prosecution.”
Mayor Robert Correia added, “This type of police work epitomizes the quality work that our Police Department does every day.”
Commending Souza and police officers on a “job well done,” the mayor said, “The city is safer because of their committed efforts.”
