Dartmouth —
Already facing a first-degree murder charge, Kyron Gorham has also been indicted for allegely assaulting a correctional officer at the Dartmouth jail.
A Bristol County grand jury indicted Gorham on a count of assault and battery of a correctional officer. Gregg Miliote, a spokesman for the district attorney, said an arraignment date has not been scheduled. Graham is jailed while he awaits trial on the murder charge.
Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson said the incident began when a correctional officer found Gorham in an area of the jail where he was not allowed. A correctional officer twice warned Gorham to return to his proper location. Hodgson said Gorham told the officer “to do what he had to do,” and Gorham “would do what he had to do.”
Hodgson said Gorham approached the officer, then turned around and began walking away, with the officer following about eight feet behind. Gorham then picked up a trash barrel and tossed it over a railing to a lower floor before turning to face the officer, Hodgson said. He then allegedly punched the officer in the head, knocking him to the ground.
Hodgson said Gorham stood over the officer as he laid on the ground and continued to assault him. The officer evetually was able to regain his footing and subdue and handcuff Gorham before backup arrived.
Hodgson said the officer was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and was released.
Gorham has lost all privileges for the next 90 days, Hodgson said, meaning he will have no outside contact with anyone but his attorney.
“I’m certainly pleased the judge made sure this guy was indicted,” Hodgson said. “It enforces our strict rules that if you are here for committing a crime in society, you are not coming here to commit crimes in this institution.”
Gorham has been held at the Dartmouth House of Correction since February 2007 in connection with the shooting death of 15-year-old Shakeem Davis.
Suspected to be a Fall River gang associate, Gorham is accused of firing a half dozen bullets into Davis’ body during an argument about a girl at the Bennie Costa housing development.
Gorham eluded arrest for nearly a month before police in Syracuse, N.Y., apprehended him.
