Sold fakes to NBA Finals on street, looked like real thing, cops say

Cops busted a counterfeit ticket ring that turned Boston’s Game 1 NBA Finals win into a total bust for dozens of faked-out fans, authorities said yesterday. “The only way to truly protect yourself is not to buy them,” said BPD spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll yesterday of the risk of purchasing from scalpers. Easier said than done in this case: The 38 phony tickets seized at TD Banknorth Garden gates Thursday night were made by sophisticated scammers and came so close to the real thing that an average game-goer would not detect the difference, Driscoll said. Police plan to launch another crackdown to curb counterfeit sales prior to Game 2, scheduled for tomorrow night at the Garden. The fakes listed phony face values at $111.50 to $376.50 but were being peddled for $200 to $600 a pop, police said. Real tickets for Thursday night’s game started at $30 and went up to $1,000 for certain courtside seats, according to a Celtics [team stats] spokeswoman. According to a police report, undercover officers were conducting surveillance in the area when NBA officials reported that a group of seven men and two women were hawking the fake seats. As a diversion from their scalper sales, the group also was holding curbside games of Three-card Monte, a card trick commonly used to scam passersby, police said. Cops allegedly seized eight fake tickets and $400 from Rama Browno, 37, of the Bronx, who was arrested and charged with larceny by scheme and forgery of records, certificates and other writings, police said. After a witness fingered three other alleged scammers, police arrested Erick Ogundo, 22, and Timothy Lim, both of Fall River; and Kirk Malone, 57, of Boston. They were charged with gaming, larceny by scheme and counterfeit notes. Judge Thomas C. Horgan set bail at $250 for each and ordered them to return to court June 26.
