LOWELL -- "Irish" Micky Ward, whose hardscrabble childhood and boxing fame have spawned the making of a Hollywood flick, has a new fight on his hands.
The Lowell Police Department will charge Ward, 42, of 132 Upham St., with assault and battery following a May 28 fight he allegedly had with his wife's stepfather, Kevin Nolette, 51, of 452 Wilder St., Police Superintendent Kenneth Lavallee said yesterday.
Lavallee said the fight was preceded by several instances of Nolette driving by Ward's home and Ward driving by Nolette's home.
In each case, both men allegedly hurled profanity-laced insults at each other and various family members.
The fight happened at about 7:30 p.m. when Ward confronted Nolette on the rear porch of Nolette's home in the densely populated neighborhood just outside of Cupples Square.
Lavallee said Ward will be charged with assault and battery and Nolette with assault. The difference between the charges is that under an assault, the suspect never actually struck the other person.
Nolette also has a restraining order against Ward, he said.
Based on interviews with Ward and Nolette and a police report, the cause of the fight appears to be domestic in nature.
Nolette said his stepdaughter, Charlene Ward, who is Ward's wife, doesn't like Nolette's girlfriend, Beth Parker.
"He's my son-in-law and the only reason I got a restraining order against him is because I don't want him coming back here to hit me again," said Nolette, whose nose appears out of alignment.
Nolette said he went to Lowell General Hospital for a broken nose and badly split inside lip. He said Ward knocked several of his teeth out. He is represented by Lowell lawyer Al Marcotte.
Ward admitted punching Nolette with a "left" and a "hook," but said he did so in self-defense.
