Fall River —
Sometimes narcotics detectives don’t have to do any investigative work to find illegal drug users.
They occasionally come to police, or drive into the back of their undercover vehicle.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Mauretti said Detectives Kevin Bshara and Jeffrey Autote were traveling north on South Main Street, near Cottage Street, last Friday about 3 p.m. when Bshara stopped the cruiser to allow a parking control officer to cross the street.
The cruiser was then rear-ended by a Mitsubishi Eclipse.
The detectives, who were uninjured, got out to speak to the other driver, Matthew Amaral, 19, of 338 Tickle Road, Westport.
“The detectives smelled marijuana on him and coming from the vehicle,” Mauretti said.
Amaral and his passengers, Craig Ouellette, 18, of 682 High St., and Justin Rothwell, 19, of 256 Weetamoe St., denied smoking marijuana, Mauretti said.
But Bshara found two partially burned marijuana cigarettes still smoldering in an ashtray, Mauretti said.
Amaral was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of a Class D drug and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
Ouellette and Rothwell are each being summonsed into District Court on a charge of possession of a Class D drug.
