FBI agents stormed Franklin Field projects in Dorchester yesterday, rounding up eight men targeted by the feds as drug dealers.
The early morning arrests came as agents lately have struck at entrenched gangs in other areas of the state in the hopes of improving quality of life inside neighborhoods, said Special Agent in Charge of the Boston FBI Warren T. Bamford.
“We’ve been pretty busy in this line of work,” Bamford said. “We’ve had a number of these types of takedowns lately, starting May 8th with ‘(Operation) Barber Shop,’ with the sports betting, Springfield and New Bedford, now, of course, Franklin Field. These types of investigations go on for several months. It’s a matter of taking the time to figure out who the real bad players (are) . . . and going after them.”
Bamford said FBI agents work with Boston cops and state police to target hot spots with the hope of putting a lid on violent crime.
“We say, ‘Hey, there’s a real problem in a particular part of town,’ ” Bamford said. “So the FBI, Boston and the state police - we all put our heads together, ‘Who do we think is involved?’ All three agencies go out and start looking for . . . the people doing all the shootings and all the drug dealing. What it takes is a cooperative effort. It lets us use all the tools in the toolbox. We’re a big organization. We have funding. We have bodies. We’re able to dedicate agents and analysts to this problem, to use federal courts and bring that weapon to the table.”
