Downward Spiral For Ex-Cop

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

This story is presented as a sad example of the downward spiral many in law enforcement encounter when they do not or cannot handle the various pressures the job places upon them. Too often we allow ourselves to become cynical and non-forgiving at other peoples' faults yet we take little or no time to look at ourselves and our fellow officers as they fail in the struggle to deal with personal problems themselves. We have to know when to be tough and we have to know when to ask for and accept help.

LAWRENCE — A former Lawrence police sergeant, who was fired after a 2007 drunken-driving arrest and resigned on the day he was to appeal the termination, is in trouble again, police said.
Ryan Shafer, 32, of Lawrence was arrested at Lawrence District Court Tuesday afternoon and charged with assault and battery on a household member — a 28-year-old female friend.
He had been in court for a hearing on a petition to have him civilly committed to Bridgewater State Hospital for drug treatment, said Clerk Magistrate Keith McDonough.
McDonough said when the court received the petition, a warrant was issued for Shafer's arrest and he was already in custody at the courthouse when the assault case arose.
During his arraignment yesterday on the assault charge, Shafer was held on $5,000 cash bail and told to return to court July 2, McDonough said.
The judge granted the petition for civil commitment and ordered that Shafer be sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for 30 days, McDonough said.
The woman in the assault case went to the police station at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday and told investigators she had a prior relationship with Shafer, but that the pair had not been seeing each other for some time.
She told police she returned from Florida about three weeks ago and Shafer had gotten her phone number and started calling her.
She told police that on Monday, Shafer called her house phone about 40 times and her cell phone about 25 times then sent flowers to her house.
She finally answered the phone about 1 p.m. on Monday and said Shafer was on the line crying and saying he had no friends and wanted to see her, police said.
She agreed and picked up Shafer on the street near his house, police said.
After driving around for awhile he told her he wanted to go to a house in North Lawrence to pick up something.
The woman told police she knew he meant he wanted to pick up $40 worth of heroin and $40 worth of crack cocaine.
When they arrived at the house, Shafer went into another room with a man who was there and came out after about five minutes while she sat at the kitchen table, the woman said.
She told police she felt Shafer did heroin and crack while he was in the other room.
When he came out he drank three beers in quick succession and began to be verbally abusive toward her, becoming more angry at her until he flipped over the kitchen table and grabbed her arm, she said.
The other man pulled Shafer off her and held him on the floor but he kept trying to attack her and the man so she sprayed Shafer with pepper spray and locked herself and her dog in the bathroom while the fight continued in the kitchen and until she was able to get away.
After his arrest, Shafer told police he met the woman at the house in North Lawrence and gave her his ATM card and PIN so she could go to a liquor store.
He told investigators he took out $400 and spent $300 on crack cocaine but didn't know how much of it he had smoked, police said.
He told police the fight began when the other man wanted to inject the woman with heroin and he grabbed her by the arm to get her out of the house.

Cynical and non-forgiving? Nahhhhhh LOL

Perhaps I'm cynical and non-forgiving, but I can't muster much sympathy for any police officer (current, former, or retired) who crosses the line into illegal drug use.

I'll do whatever I can to help them get clean and straighten out their life, but I sure as hell don't want them standing next to me at roll call and I won't enable their addiction in the name of professional courtesy.

Love that guy! Normally martial arts themed movies can get so corny (as that one did) but still got to love Mr. Miyagi! Daniel San was a cutie too but just a little too small and weenie like for my tastes.

If you like martial arts movies get Kung Fu Hustle, its a cross between Enter The Dragon and Blazing Sadles, very good movie.

Once you've seen a few kids die from f**king around with drugs, you'll feel the same way and perhaps become as salty as you think you are right now.
