The DES MOINES REGISTER reports today that a man there owes his life to a police officer and others following an incident yesterday afternoon.

A 33-year-old Waukee man was in stable condition at a Des Moines hospital after bystanders and a police officer saved him from drowning in Gray's Lake on Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses said Alberto Pino swam out near the lake's buoy line, but soon began to sink.

Michael Ostermann of Des Moines said he was on the beach when he heard someone say a man was drowning.

"I looked out on the lake and saw his head there and saw that he was struggling and just took off running," said Ostermann,49.

Pino's head sank under the water as Ostermann and a few other people swam to his aid.

"We saw him hitting the water," said Clayton Spieker, 28, of Des Moines. "His head went under, so we had to dive for him."

Witnesses said Pino was beneath water for about a minute before he was found and brought to shore. The water was deep enough, Ostermann said, that he couldn't touch the bottom of the lake with his feet.

Pino was not breathing when the group brought him to shore. Witnesses started CPR, and Officer Brad Youngblut — the first Des Moines police officer to arrive — helped administer rescue breathing.
After Youngblut gave three rescue breaths, Pino coughed up some water and started breathing on his own. Police helped roll Pino on his side until an ambulance arrived and took him to Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Four people have drowned in Gray's Lake in the last eight years. There are no lifeguards at the popular public beach.
