CONCORD – A driver eluded a police chase yesterday morning, careening wildly through the city before crashing his pickup truck.
In the end, police found Brian Eldridge hiding under a bed in an apartment directly across from the Concord Police Department.
Eldridge, 25, was arrested and charged with driving while a habitual offender, reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer, conduct after an accident and breach of bail conditions.
He is being held on $50,000 cash bail pending arraignment.
New Hampshire State Police said Trooper Matthew Shapiro attempted to stop a 2005 Toyota Tundra for speeding on Interstate 93 about 5:26 a.m.
Police said the driver took Exit 14, traveling easterly on Bridge Street, where he ran a red light at the intersection of North State Street. He continued on Centre Street, and left onto Rumford Street, running additional red lights and stop signs, according to police.
He eventually gave the trooper the slip in the downtown area.
A Concord police officer then located an oil slick leading to a rear parking lot at 14 South St., where police discovered the Toyota Tundra with heavy front-end damage.
Police said the Tundra's driver turned onto Fayette Street at a high rate of speed and struck a retaining wall, a tree and a "wrong way" sign.
"With the assistance of local citizens, the suspect was eventually seen entering a rear slider door at 38 Green St., which is directly across the street from the Concord Police Department," state police said in a written statement.
Police found Eldridge at 38 Green St. hiding under a bed in an upstairs bedroom. Police headquarters are at 35 Green St.
