LONG ISLAND (1010 WINS) -- The controversial plan to publish the names and photos of drunk driving suspects didn't end in the days after Memorial Day.
Nassau police and County Executive Tom Suozzi plan to resume and beef up the campaign this weekend.
A new unit, the DWI Impact Team, was created to patrol what police consider hot spots for drunken driving, Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey said. Intoxicated boaters would also be targeted by the unit.
Police will again provide the media with the names and photographs of anyone charged with DWI, Mulvey said.
81 people were charged over the Memorial Day holiday. Their names and photos appeared in several papers and websites, including 1010WINS.com.
Suozzi spokeswoman Jennifer Kim told Newsday the county's plan is to continue releasing the personal information of people charged with driving drunk, part of an "ongoing initiative" with new photos released to the media every Monday.

Less than two weeks after a Nassau County police officer was nearly killed by an allegedly drunken driver, a precinct commander's squad car was struck Friday night by a driver who authorities said was drunk.

Insp. Paul Clark, 44, commander of Nassau's Fourth Precinct, was heading east on Merrick Road to the scene of a robbery - police lights flashing - when his vehicle was struck by a 1999 Nissan sedan turning left onto Hewlett Avenue at 11:55 p.m., police said. He suffered minor back injuries and refused medical attention.

The Nissan driver, Wilma Klass, 59, of 188 Hewlett Ave., Merrick, failed a field sobriety test at the scene and was charged with driving while impaired, police said. She was being held yesterday on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.

The crash, coming just 12 days after Officer Kenneth Baribault was struck by an allegedly drunken driver during a Long Island Expressway traffic stop, prompted an angry statement from County Executive Thomas Souzzi.

"This just highlights the madness of drunk driving," said Suozzi, who has crusaded against drunken driving since the May 18 crash involving Baribault.

"In this day and age, even with so much media attention, people continue to make these choices. They don't realize they are really operating a deadly weapon," Suozzi said.

Baribault remains in critical condition at Nassau University Medical Center, said Lt. Kevin Smith, a police spokesman.
