A 52-year-old man was shot and killed last night during a confrontation with D.C. police in the Trinidad area of Northeast Washington, police said.
They said officers opened fire when the man approached them with a knife and refused to drop it.
The man was not identified immediately.
Police said they were called to a house in the 1600 block of Trinidad Avenue NE about 9 p.m. to deal with a reported domestic dispute between a man and a woman.
When they arrived, the man in question phoned the house to say he was nearby.
During a phone call, he threatened to harm the woman, police said.
Speaking with the man by phone, officers urged him to return to the house. When he came back, police said, he began mounting the rear steps of the house, armed with a knife.
After the man refused to obey their order to drop the knife, two officers opened fire, police said. The man was hit in the body.
He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
