UTICA, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Cases of canned Utica Club beer were flying off the shelves after a fire severely damaged the F.X. Matt Brewery's canning operations. Apparently, people were worried that a cherished summertime staple might be in short supply as the Utica brewery scrambles to find another place to can its brew.
The owner of Marcy Beverage in the Mohawk Valley town of Marcy says that after the Thursday night fire, it sold 550 cases of the brewery's products, which include Saranac and Utica Club beers. One customer ordered 22 cases of Utica Club on Friday.
Canning makes up about 20% of business at the brewery but vice president Fred Matt says plans are under way to outsource canning while Matt's rebuilds.
State and federal investigators were at the brewery on Friday assisting local officials in determining the cause of the blaze. The preliminary cause was linked to some welding that was being done in the area where the fire started.
