WITH SUCH lucrative checks, it begs the question of why Cormier, Russ Taylor and Tousignant are in hot pursuit of the police chief's job at UMass Lowell, as is PD civilian Chuck Ouellette.
The university's 20-member screening committee received 49 applications. The committee held its first meeting last week and identified several candidates with whom members will have preliminary discussions this month and next.
From that pool, interviews will be conducted, and three to five candidates will be selected as finalists for consideration by Chancellor William Hogan.

THE LIST of candidates vying for the UMass Lowell police chief's job has been winnowed from 49 to 10, and making the cut were three Lowell police officers: Deputy Superintendent Dennis Cormier and Sgts. Russ Taylor and Dave Tousignant.
But in what appears to be a new development, there's chatter that the Lowell candidates are busy crunching numbers, fearful they could lose pension benefits by making the jump.
There's also talk that there are some strong candidates from outside the city, in particular from other state universities.
Either way, the semifinalists are scheduled to be interviewed this week. A UMass Lowell screening committee is expected to provide Chancellor William Hogan a few names of finalists in a few weeks
