NEW YORK — Police officers shot and injured a man they said was responsible for a drive-by shooting in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn last night, officials said.
According to an official account, the man had been driving a red Ford Windstar with North Carolina plates along Patchen Avenue when he fired at a 32-year-old woman on the sidewalk. Two police officers and a sergeant in a patrol car who witnessed the shooting then gave chase.
They followed the Windstar more than six blocks until it jumped the sidewalk at Lewis Avenue and Macon Street.
The man then jumped out of the car and began running. At least one of the officers fired as he fled, hitting the man once in the hip.
Police officials said a .45-caliber Starfire semiautomatic pistol believed to belong to the man was found near where he was shot.
The incident marked the second time in less than 24 hours that police officers shot at suspects, and officials said both shootings were believed to be appropriate under police department guidelines for using force.
The suspect and the victim were treated at Kings County Hospital and were in stable condition, police said. The man was not identified and had not been arrested or charged as of yesterday evening.
