WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) Something's different on the Westfield State College campus. There is increased police presence and officers are wearing protective gear from head to toe. But there's no emergency here. They're just learning how to handle a threat of gun violence on campus.
One officer dressed in all black is playing the role of a shooter. While the trainees rush after him, firing mock pistols with simulated ammunition.
"The training today is going to get those first responders to deal with that threat within the first 5 to 10 minutes and then take the person into custody," said Sgt. Aaron Washington of the Massachusetts State Police.
The college's Institute of Homeland Security is hosting this training with the help of the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactics and Operations Team.
They say it's as close as it can get to a real life situation. For the 16 Westfield State police officers participating in this exercise, it's a valuable opportunity.
"It's good for my guys. I have all the confidence in the world should something happen, myself and my guys could effectively stop the situation," said Lt. David Dray of Westfield State College.
The 10-hour training is funded thru a U.S. Department of Justice Grant.
