WORCESTER— A Burncoat Street man was ordered held on $20,000 cash bail yesterday on child pornography charges.
Paul V. Burdulis, 38, of 87 Burncoat St., was arraigned in Central District Court on charges of posing a child in a sexual act and possession of child pornography (second offense).
Assistant District Attorney Roberta A. O’Brien said the charges were related to items seized by Worcester police as a result of search warrants issued for Mr. Burdulis’ apartment and computer. According to a written statement filed in court by Sgt. Michael Cappabianca, the warrants, which were issued Thursday and Friday, led to the seizure of several hundred computer images and digital movie files depicting young males under age 12 engaged in sex acts.
The warrants were sought after police officers, who were at Mr. Burdulis’ home April 12 for undisclosed reasons, discovered what they believed was child pornography on his computer, according to the court filing.
Ms. O’Brien said Mr. Burdulis had a prior conviction for possessing child pornography while serving in the military. The prosecutor asked that the suspect’s bail be set at $25,000 cash.
Mr. Burdulis’ appointed lawyer, Michael G. Cashman, said his client had family in the area and was not a risk of flight.
Judge Paul L. McGill set bail at $20,000 cash or $200,000 with surety and continued the case to June 24 for a probable cause hearing.
WORCESTER— Investigators are sifting through several thousand pictures depicting hundreds of young boys engaged in sexual acts after the images were allegedly seized from a city’s man computer.
The owner of the computer, Paul V. Burdulis, 38, of 87 Burncoat St., was arraigned in Central District Court Tuesday on charges of posing a child in a sexual act and possession of child pornography (second offense). He is being held on $20,000 cash bail.
Special crimes Sgt. Michael A. Cappabianca said authorities are trying to identify the young boys in the pictures, where the pictures originated and whether Mr. Burdulis took the pictures. Several cameras were seized from Mr. Burdulis’ home, according to the sergeant.
Detectives are also looking at the backgrounds of the pictures to try to determine where the images came from as well as reviewing several videos seized. Sgt. Cappabianca said videos apparently from webcams of young males were also found on the computer.
He described young males in the images on the computer as all under the age of 12.
Police allegedly found the images while investigating a report of an erratic driver on April 12. Officers were following up on the report of a Jeep with a driver either ill or intoxicated, the sergeant said.
Police were able to determine Mr. Burdulis owned the Jeep and went to his home April 12. When they arrived they found the keys to the home in the door and the door halfway open. The officers rang the doorbell and knocked on the door, calling out to anyone inside, but no one came to the door.
The Jeep in the driveway still had its headlights on and there was a pair of shoes in the front seat, Sgt. Cappabianca said.
Fearing someone needed medical assistance, officers went inside. They allegedly found Mr. Burdulis semiconscious and an ambulance was called.
Officers checked the home to see if any other people were inside in need of help. In a room believed to be dedicated for computer use, police allegedly found the computer with the illicit images on the screen.
That prompted the investigation by Sgt. Cappabianca.
Court officials said Tuesday that Mr. Burdulis had a prior conviction for possessing child pornography while serving in the military.
