Was among six charged with soliciting sex

By Eric Moskowitz

Globe Staff / May 25, 2008

An undercover Boston police operation to discourage prostitution near the Dorchester-Roxbury line Friday snared a man identified as a Boston firefighter, officials said.An officer disguised as a prostitute was standing at a public parking lot near Blue Hill Avenue and La Grange Place at about 10:50 p.m. Friday when Collin M. Herelle pulled up in his white Cadillac and offered the officer $29 for a sex act, according to police. The undercover officer signaled to other officers nearby, who moved in and arrested Herelle, said Officer Eddy Chrispin, a Boston police spokesman.
Herelle, who is 44, lives in Dorchester. A spokesman for the Boston Fire Department confirmed yesterday that Herelle is an active firefighter who has served six years with the department. The spokesman, Steve MacDonald, could not immediately identify the station where Herelle works or provide other details of his service. City records show that Herelle earned nearly $98,000 in gross pay last year.
Police charged Herelle with soliciting sex for a fee. Officers also seized his car, a 2004 Cadillac wagon, for 48 hours and issued a $300 citation for using the vehicle to solicit a prostitute, in accordance with a Boston ordinance, police said. Herelle will be arraigned Tuesday in Roxbury District Court on the solicitation charge, Chrispin said.
MacDonald said it's most likely Herelle will be allowed to work while his case continues. Department protocol calls for a firefighter in this situation to tell his or her commanding officer, who notifies the commissioner's office, MacDonald said. The department makes a case-by-case determination in situations like this after the legal matter is resolved in court, he said. Because of the holiday weekend, it was unclear yesterday whether Herelle had notified superiors, MacDonald said.
Multiple calls placed to a number listed for Herelle were not returned yesterday. Edward Kelly, president of the firefighters union, said he didn't know Herelle but thought the incident could be a sign of stress from the contentious contract dispute between the city and the firefighters.
"I think that the pressures of working without a contract are beginning to manifest in the darndest ways," said Kelly, president of Local 718.
The antiprostitution sweep, conducted by officers from District B-2 in Dorchester and Roxbury and dubbed "Operation Squeeze," also netted five others, who were charged with soliciting sex for a fee: Angel M. Gonzalez, 36, of Dorchester; Andreas Markoupolos, 44, of Worcester; Dwaine E. Brittle, 26, of Roxbury; Galvon F. Mosley, 36, of Boston; and David Asiedu, 26, of Mattapan, according to police.

Don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch. People think the same about police officers to the point of total idiocy.

That's why he got caught. By the time back up arrived he was still fishing nickels out of his console.

I think everyone who knows me knows I'm very pro-union, but that was a supremely stupid response to the situation.

29 dollars...not 29.95? ..I will refrain from any bad comments about the firefighter..especially in light of the fact BPD had it's own Boom Boom room..I think I may have lost all respect for their Union President after his stupid comment. Albeit we Public Safety people are an amorous bunch, are we not? lol

Comparing the lack of a contract, with trying to pick up a hooker, is stupid at best.

The BFD, right, wrong, or indifferent, is on the media radar screen. Don't ever underestimate the power of the media.

But at the same time, the BFD union should not be painting itself into a corner. It's quite obvious that is the direction they're going in.

The days of being the "bravest" and post 911 heroes are now under attack.

I think it's time to take a step back because the glory days are currently in jeopardy.

The union as a whole has to decide how long the battle is worth fighting.

A married Boston firefighter allegedly caught trying to pay an undercover officer $29 for sex will remain on duty while his case is adjudicated, a fire department spokesman said yesterday.
Collin M. Herelle, 44, of Dorchester, pleaded not guilty yesterday in Roxbury District Court, where he was arraigned on one count of soliciting sex for a fee. He was arrested Friday night when he pulled his 2004 white Cadillac into a parking lot on Blue Hill Avenue and allegedly offered an undercover officer $29 for oral sex, according to a police report.
Herelle, who wore a dark suit and glasses to court, declined comment. He was ordered to complete Project TRUST (Teaching Referral Understanding Support and Testing) and stay away from Blue Hill Avenue and La Grange Place where he was arrested during Operation Squeeze, a special operation to nab johns.
Herelle’s attorney, Matthew J. Machera, declined comment. Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said Herelle has been a firefighter for six years and is assigned to Engine 4, which is on Cambridge Street in the old West End. Herelle is not being placed on leave, he said.
He said the decision to place an employee on leave is made on a case-by-case basis depending on the seriousness of the case and past work history. Herelle made $98,000 last year.
Ed Kelly, president of the Boston firefighter’s Local 718, did not return two calls for comment.
Herelle’s alleged criminal conduct follows a string of embarrassing arrests for Boston firefighters as the union and the city remain locked in an ugly contract battle with a proposal to require random alcohol and drug testing as the major sticking point. In March, police arrested a firefighter for allegedly smoking marijuana in a department car. In April, a firefighter was arrested after allegedly buying OxyContin pills from a South Boston drug dealer.
